Hello, does anyone have pics of the damper pipe mounting hardware while mounted on the bus. Ive never had a stock bus muffler. This is my first totally stock setup. I dont have the hardware needed to do it right yet. Did a search but I either missed a pic or didnt see any. The kit I bought has 2 big clamps but I think Im missing some stuff. I guess what Im really looking for is an up close pic that shows how everything goes together. The bently shows an original muffler and damper pipe but I dont have that. Mines probably from a bay window bus but thats what busdepot sent me. I got two big clamps ones perfectly round and the other one is odd shaped. I also see two bolt hols in the side of the muffler, probably for a bracket to support the damper? Im not even sure if there is another spot used to support the damper pipe. The tab welded onto the end of the damper pipe right before the curved part, where exhaust exits, is facing rear ward. Theres nowhere to attatch that. Even if there was it would have to be some sort of rubber or muffler hanger type of support.

2 are stamped VW, the other is an LMB piece. These have the metal sleeves in the bolt holes.

Per Bentley this style of mount to the left bumper bracket was discontinued in September 1963 at chassis 1 167 803. After that the tab on the rear of the dampner mounts to a support on the muffler.

Not to be a dick, but do you own a Bentley Manual??? If not, buy one.

The only difference between a Split and Bay muffler assembly is the tailpipe. Did you try Euclid before calling Busdepot???

Yes I own a bently manual, and the only picture it shows is the bottom view of the muffler assembly. I cant see where the rubber mount goes, and where the last clamp attatches to. Seems kinda odd to attatch the clamp to the corner body sheetmetal if thats where it really fastens to. Also I wanted to see why my damper pipe is not parrallel with the muffler. Mine comes out of the muffler at more than 90 degrees? My damper is just not lining up anywhere near where the bently manual shows.

As noted above, the rubber mount was discontinued in September 1963 so unless you have a really early 64, you don't use it anyway. By last clamp, do you mean #15 in the diagram? It doesn't attach to anything, it just clamps the tailpipe to the dampner pipe.

Post a pix of your new muffler and dampner. The muffler outlet should be straight back (not at an angle) and the curved part of the dampner pipe just goes in the outlet of the muffler, with the tab on the rear of the dampner bolted to the tab on the end of the muffler. You can almost see the tab on the muffler above #28 in the diagram above, and it's very obvious in the Bentley pix. Sounds like either your muffler or dampner pipe is bent wrong.

Well since this is apparently aftermarket crap, buying the original brackets and mounting hardware wont work anyway so I just welded my own. No use spending money for stuff that was made to fit original mufflers and damper pipes. In order to get the pipe parallel with the bumper I would have to cut some off of the damper pipe to muffler elbow.

Ok heres the pics
I made my own side muffler bracket. Hose clamps are to pull the muffler to intake preheat pipe closer to muffler. I'll take those off later. I bought the oil filter relocation kit from summit racing so I could still use the filter pump with the stock muffler. Only the hoses are still a hair to close to the pipe, hence the hose clamps. Of course after I get the oil filter relocation kit, did I run across the threads saying the maxiflow oil pump cover is much better, and they have hose barb fittings coming right out of the cover.
So anyway, Im not sure if all of the aftermarket stuff has this problem or not, but I made the support bracket. Its probably stronger than the original one too. Im still debating whether to cut and weld the damper elbow so it will be right.

Just from looking at that pic, it looks like the damper pipe could be cut allowing it to be closer to the muffler. You could use the factory mount then. Is that a dansk sticker on that damper pipe?

I can't see the left side but from that pic it looks like you stuck the incorrect end into the hole. Flip it over and see if it fits closer.

I had one which looked like this one, and it hit the bumper.
Got another one with a bigger vertical drop at the bend, and it doesn't hit, so it doesn't cause the "rattle of insanity", like the first one.

That might be your solution, try swapping it around before you start cutting

Yes putting the damper on backwards isnt really a good idea is it. Ok stupid blunder reversed. That explains why the tab welded onto the damper pipe had no where to attatch to. Next question is when I try to mate the damper pipe tab to the muffler tab together to put a bolt through it. the damper will hit the bumper bracket before the tabs are flush together. Distance between tabs is about 1 inch. Options are bend tabs closer, or extend tabs, add more hardware, possable bent bumper bracket, missing hardware. Ok is this aftermarket parts fit issue or a me issue?

which is what bolts to the left side of the bumper and holds the dampner pipe.

Perhaps your bumper bracket is bent. How much clearance is there between the bottom of your engine lid and the top of the bumper?
Generally I assemble everything loosely, then go round and snug the bolts after everything is fitted, but I haven't been unable to bolt the tabs together.
