I hope you don't mind my asking, but are those paint chips on the rear quarter and fender? Or just strange reflections in the paint?

yes it is paint chips, I kept all of the paint imperfections all around the car so it looks just un restored.
I prefer this way rather than having to repaint the whole car.

Hi Steve,

really nice car, congrats!
Are you aware that your inside mirror is from 58 and later models?

I've got the same repro one in my 57 vert.

The original should be looking like this:

Best,
marc

Wow, didn't notice that. The Aug 1957 onward (1958 model year interior mirror) probably works pretty much the same in function, but Marc is right. For "correct-ness", the earlier interior mirror assembly is the one to get for that stunning black Kabriolett!

That's what the issue is - it DOES NOT work the same. The angle of the mirror, when tilted upwards, does not allow to see over the top. Which limits the usability of the mirror...unless one alters the base mounted to the window frame, and tilts it. All in all, the 58 mirrors do not work well on pre-58 cars.

Kai-Eric ... you here...  ... still waiting on our mirror-deal...

thanks noticing the details, that visor was in since I got the car back in late 2000's. Seems it has been there since decades so I consider it to be part of the history of the car. Maybe one day if I find a correct era visor I will consider buying one...

You wrote earlier that you have a repro mid 58 up mirror. The repro mirrors are known for the problem you describe on 58 up verts as well. I tried my original VW 59 mirror on my 56 and it worked as it should but as stated not correct.

Maybe you could post pictures showing the original mirror setup a) in the 59 an d b) in the 56 ?
Would be great to see where there could be a difference.
I first suspected that a 56 front window top frame might have a different angle then a 58/59 top frame, but as you said: it could be the problem of original vs. repro.
With the repro having a limited swivel head of the mirror, thus allowing it not to tilt enough to be able to see over the convertibles roof when opened.

kaieric Thu Sep 05, 2024 1:49 am

it must be an issue with the repro as oval mirror setup was continued beyond 1957 windshield enlargement which did not affect it's accuracy of fit. vice versa later mirrors should fit windshield frame prior to the '57 modifications.

Since Jerome has never complained about difficulties with his mirror, I assume that this is the original version.

well, what type do you like better? 8)
i.m.o. white wall tyres would fit her the best and would be a charming remembrance to the pictures you showed early in 2010.

That is what it is all about. You are having a wonderful and memorable time with the family in a sweet car.

I am more like 100% OG in my choice, and I know the car came with black wall tires, and for some reasons, a black oval with black tire is what I always preferred. looking to also remove the white top one day and get one black the same as when it came from factory

as for the beauty ring whether OG or option as X pattern I like both of them.
what to me stand out are the fender skirts. when ever pple come an see the bug the fender skirt is always the things that pple look at 1st.

yes indeed, taking some simple ride whether with kid, wife or grand parents, and taking few pictures is what make good memories.

Adding to your statement - the oval looks great with fender skirts!

:D

Here everyone, and happy NY 2025.
It isn't something I would have expected to do, but my 56 Cabrio is going to be for sale.
The reason behind that is because I am about to seal a deal on something that I could not have imagined and is expected take place in the upcoming few weeks, and requires me to get some funding available.
A formal add of the 56 cabriolet will be put online once my other deal is done and settled.

In the meantime I am open to discuss in private with serious and interested people.
I am looking to get this car to stay in good hands !!

thanks,
/Jerome
