Hello, I'm Niels from Holland and I have a question about my type 1 exchange engine. Can someone explain the engine numbers on the pictures. All the pictures are the same engine. On the normal engine code place on the case is stamped 'H 089899' but around the corner of the case is stamped 'H 192459 X'. In the M code list this should be a late 1965 and mid 1966 engine. But I miss the 0 after the H. Did they always leave the 0 away at H0 cases? Also there should not be a X on exchange engines before 1968. I also do not understand what the dates means on the back of the case '6-1-19' and '18-12-38'. I hope someone can identify this engine. Kind regards Niels.

I don't know if the "new" engine # of H 089899 means anything other than a possible sequential number of the rebuilt engines.
H 192459 X may be the original engine # it replaced?
Yes, they left off the zero for whatever reason.
Here is a thread on the engine case half production markings:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=380362
6-1-19 = January 6th, 1969
18-12-38 = December 18th, 1968
I am guessing on the years but I think that would be correct since it's a factory rebuilt engine. |

My guess is, that it was re-manufactured more than once.
The refurbished symbol and the "H" look like they were stamped at the factory but the serial number was most likely stamped by the installer by hand.
I haven't seen the engine code stamped on the side. Seems a bit odd. Also normally I would expect the old number to be at least x-ed out. |

The numbers behind the flywheel are casting dates, Jan 6 1969, and Dec 18 1968. The first circle is the day, second is the month, and the third is the shift (1-3) and the last digit of the year. |
