View original topic: Speedo/odometermeter Cable and first Drive

Hi everyone!

I have a '59 356A Super. I looked around and am unable to find the cable. Also, I need the first drive that picks up the rotation from the cable (in the gauge).

Does anyone have these or can give me a lead. I do not want to have the gauge rebuilt, 'cause it is only missing the one drive and I can do it myself.

Thx for any tips!

Okay, I found out that the cable is the same as on the 356 B and Cs - strange though that pelicanparts does only sell B and C cables!?

I ordered the cable from Al Zim. He seems to be a very nice guy - offered help. In addition I am getting a junk speedo from Stephen (Route30Classics). This is somewhat of a gamble, since he didn't know if the gears were in tact/complete.

The speedo restoration places are very uncooperative. E.g. I called North Hollywood Speed where they insisted that I have to get the entire unit rebuilt for at least $150. $150 for a missing/broken cross gear is pretty ridiculous I find! Some places should realize that good service generates excellent customers - cause we all will always need stuff!

We'll see how it goes ...

I checked my old 356 spindles and saw that they're pretty much the same as the Beetle spindles. Same through hole in the driver's sdie one to accept the speedo cable.

I have VW spindles in my 356 and use the speedo cable from a 1968 VW Bus. It works perfectly with a perfect price tag as well, $3 at the Terryville Swap Meet. I'll bet that it would work just a well with the stock 356 spindles, especially the drum brake cars.

You could probably use a Beetle cable as well . . .

If you don't have any luck with rebuilding your 356 speedo, you can easily substitute the internals from a nice cheep 914 speedo and be on your way. The needle, face and all are a dead on swap. Even though the 914 takes it's signal from the transaxle, it works accurately off of the front wheel as well and accepts a VW speedo cable as though it were made for it. It'll accept the 356 speedo cable as well. Same threads and square in-put/drive hole.

Luck ! !
