I would like to know for sure, too...

I have a '59 Bug and the PO put in a 1600 engine. Tranny is original, but won't go into 4th gear. Wonder if I need to replace the tranny or just fix it

Phzsicallz, zes it can be done. If zour car is still 6v zouäll need to change flzwheels or convert to 12v.

I'll let others comment on how well mating a 1600 to a stock split case trans would work, I donät think motor was reallz designed for those gear ratios.

oh hell, z -> y, and ä->'

yes its very common. there' s differences that need to be addressed. do a search on this. youll discover a few other things involved with this swap. such as the larger 1600 12volt flywheel fitting into the smaller 1200 6volt flywheels trans bellhouseing. somebody more knowlegeable than me can tell you the differnt ways to go about this. its not hard.

my bug is already 12 volts
and my transmission is original
the 1200 cc engine is a 1974 12v and my bug is a 1965
so the problem 6v and 12v is not verry much a problem

i did fit years ago a 1300 cc on a 1200 cc transmission and that was nice driving

im bit confused about a 1200cc 1974 12v motor. thinking , motors for 74,just 1600. could be wrong. so the car is only electical 12v conversion? . main thing=the inside of yur 65 6 volt trans needs to be enlarged to fit a larger 12v 1600 flywheel. you need to determine the size of your donor 1600sp engines flywheel. probably its a 12v with 130 teeth. the 6v fly has 109 teeth. i believe can use 6v fly on 1600,not sure. when you offer the 12v/engine/fly to the trans and it goes in no further the teeth are hitting the bell houseing. spin engine with socket. pull engine away, the marks left by the teeth are where the metal must be removed for larger flywheel. grind off little as possible.theres other factors too.clutch release compatibility, starter bushings . research to do it RIGHT. more experienced can explain it simpler. do a search get the details. this is just the basics. good luck.

all I had to do for mine was:
A: grind out the bell housing,
you need to take off 3mm all the way areound the housing
dont let the dust the grinding causes build up as it is very flamable.
B: put in a 12v starter. If your flywheel has 130 teeth (12volt version)
you need to either change your starter to a 12 volt or you can run your 6volt starter if you change the flywheel on the 1600 to 6 volt, but it is easier and wiser to change out your starter. they have them for 52 bucks at autozone. just so you know

also if you car was not previously 12 volt you will need to change out all lights and anything electrical,

good luck hope i helped a little

thanks
i think my belhouse is already grinded
it is the original 65 tranny and there is a 12v engine from 1974 in it ( 1200)
the starter is also 12v so like i been reading here it needs to work like this
take out the 1200 and put in the sp 1600
the transmission would not have any problems whit the 1600 ?
it seems to be a B blok and they were fabricated from 69 - 71
from a bus so i think

This is simple, you guys are making it too hard:

it will work....

Just make sure your bell housing is ground out for a 12 volt flywheel, you have a 12 volt starter, and your fine. The motor and tranny will bolt up together just fine otherwise. Then it's a matter of hooking up your throttle cable, other pertinent wiring, and fuel.... and your golden.
