All the Transporters were and are still called Type 2. Splits were Type 2, T1; Bays were Type 2, T2; Vanagons were Type 2, T3, Eurovans here were Type 2, T4; and the next generation after North America's version was still Type 2, T5. They may even be up to T6 in other parts of the world; I'm not sure. I'm not sure if there was some other nomenclature for the platform, but they were still called Type 2, and then the generation was T (for Transporter) and then the generation number.
Some areas the Type 2 was known as the Type 25.
Some people mistakenly say Type 3 or Type 4 in referring to a Vanagon or Eurovan when they mean Type 2 T3, or Type 2 T4.
At one time T2, T3, and T4 were all being produced somewhere at the same time. Brazil still has a T2 that is very much the same body style as our Bays here. South Africa had the T3 until 2002 or so, and we had the T4 Eurovan here in North America.

| For clarity, some often use "type" or upper case "T" to denote the vehicle style (little car v. bus, etc) and lower case "t" to denote stage (t3 = third stage bus = Vanagon/Caravelle/whatever). |
