Hello everyone I was considering the purchase of the recently added barndoor in the split bus classifieds,the blue one with the asking price of 6500$ I was hoping for some input,opinions general thoughts and ideas concerning this vehicle...I am currently in process of a 67 deluxe restoration & I thought this would be a good vehicle to consider purchasing now so I have it in a year or two,or however long it takes to get this vehicle. Thank you.Justin

If you read the threads about Columbian barndoors, you will learn that most of them are missing alot of the parts they were originally built with.
In Columbia when a bus is broken, they patch it up the best that they can, not the most correct ways due to limited funds and or parts.

Thanks everyone Im really hoping for a real education stemming from this thread;I really would not expect all good or positive responces,so please everybody be at liberty to be completely honest about this bus and other bus' from this location for it could be the critical info I need in making the decision as to whether or not this is the bus for me...or any body........thank you sincerely justin

i think you have read some about buses and seen some really neat stuff out there and the first BARNDOOR that pops up for sale you are ready to get it because at a glance it looks cheap.when you add in bubbas first hand knowledge of what it costs to export a bus from bogata and the missing pieces it looks expensive to me and it really doesnt even do all that much for me due to it being a panel...i say keep looking.

with that said my opinion is my opinion and only that and i have seen some getting better deals on buses.the bubble has popped and peolpe are hurting wether or not they are bus people i cant say.

also i am not bagging on all you panel owners...its not that much of a desirable model if its your only bus.

:) i guess model love depends on your standpoint.
I say grab this bus, and get it to the USA. Then take a look at what your up against. its not gonna be cheap to get, but is any BD cheap to get? especially here in the US? If you dont like it once its here, there will be plenty of people whod be glad to take it off your hands. for 12k, ahhhh maybe not as many. but itd be dope to have. panels dont have much that could go missing. glass, bumpers etc are spendy stuff. but... youd have a bd panel.... bomb.

You should go down there and check things out for yourself. You might find something like this. I was going to keep it a secret but here's a picture. It is almost to the states. Thanks Sander for your help. Just goes to show that you can find good ones in colombia.

Hi, maddriverman

I have a Colombian deluxe it the blue and white one in the thread dockmaster posted. What a lot of people say is true they mostly are in a bad way but find a BD that isn't at the price you are willing to spend! With Gerson around now anything can be fixed the guy is a hero and will help you out as much as he can with pretty much anything. When i brought my bus i did pretty much what gatorwyatt said and as soon as one came up i got it straight away. I don't regret my decision though, probably the best one i ever made :D . I am doing a full resto on mine but i could of done a bit of patching up and overhaul the running gear and put it on the road, it would of been the rough BD in the world (it may be a slight understatement about what i had to do to get it on the road :? ) :wink:

If you get it and it is a bit worse than you thought/wanted to get yourself in for, you could just do as mightymouse said any sell it on, or plunge loads of money and time into it like the rest us :wink:

Before you take on a Columbian barndoor, try to see one in the flesh before buying one so you can see what you are getting yourself in to. They are a very diferent kind of project compared to a rusty bus, but as long as your eyes are wide open before you buy, you know what the score is. Are there any more pics of this particular bus? Difficult to tell from 3 pics if its distorted.

btw, the 'Good Kombi' advertised by Sander looks to have started life as a panel van too...

For example, take the rear window on the blue panel. Any thoughts on the cost of an OG rear window section, or a Gerson panel and also replacement glass to just sort that panel out? :wink:

luckily,65 and earlier trucks use the same rear window and glass(logos changed of course) as barndoor. so that shouldnt be too difficult. just depends how clean you would want the repair to be.

The red "good kombi" is a panel, I found it about 3 years ago, it's been sitting in a truck repair yard for years, it is being used as a parts shed, now that's project :D :D :D: , from the 3 pics shown, the blue one looks descent though......have Sander send you a plane ticket down here, and take a look at it yourself, then you'll really know what you are getting yourself into :roll: :roll: :roll:

OK, I'm not going to beat around the bush here. Some Columbian Barndoors are FUCKING HORRIBLE so be very careful and don't have dreams of a good deal when you are actually getting what you pay for. I'm not saying that there is any misrepresentation at all and I know that Gerson goes way out of his way to be very clear in his descriptions but just understand that there is good reason why you see so many of them getting passed around from one owner to another with little or nothing done to them in between. They can be so overwhelmingly bad that you can't get a strategy together as to what to do in order to get them into shape.

Silky, you have been there and seen some for these buses in person. If you need a second OP, ask Ronnie (splitpile). These are the guys that have been in the war zone. From what i have seen, It is hit or miss. I know people that have gotten out of VW's because they got fuck, But i know people that got a good bus at good market value. Just don't go in with a blind eye. Good Luck!

The way we get them into shape here at the shop it to put a plasma torch to them, throw the bad shit away, save what we can, and start all over again, with a rear tortion housing, and a VIN plate....... :D :D :D I am not saying there are not good ones to be found, I have personally found 3 or 4 of them, but most are FUCKED in a BIG WAY, there is no fucking fixing them, unless you start all over again.... :D :D :D.....we have been thru this before here on the samba, about 40 times, be realistic about your "BD dreams".... buyer beware!!!!!!!!
