ok, i have a 1971 vw bay window deluxe with the large sunroof that needs repaired. can anyone walk me through how to do this, or point me in the direction of a topic that someone has already restored this part of the bus. i need to know the mechanics of the sunroof, i know the cables are there and everything, but i found some drain lines or something along those lines. please help!

Nice ride! especially in florida! when the roof is open make sure to vaccum out the drain lines the best you can and then blow them out the rear ones drain into the battery tray, and the front ones drain out right behind the front wheels before the rocker panels, as for a good book check the bentley manual, I have noticed that some have the sunroof section and some don't so make sure its in there before handing over the cash. and keep them tracks clean and well lubed and your cables will last forever just take good care of them each year and they will take good care of you.

you mean the cables?

Does anything move when you turn the handle? Does the handle turn? Is there anything jammed into the back to hold it up? Is there any screws or sealant visible on the outside?

Heed busdaddy's advice. Mine was filled with expanding foam.

ok, we took out the whole system. when i turned the handle, the cables would lock up and they would start to curl up at the end.
