X3...keep it like that. A 57 is not a such rare beast. Look at the hot rod guy that preserve their old cars with history. They do not return them in stock form. An old hot rod with history will be restored as when he was built because it has an history.
In the past there was purist that wanted to keep the old cars as when they were new...now there is purist that want to do the cars when they were popular or successfull :)
I remember that I read an article about baja in Vw classic if I remember well in 1981 with a photo of Gary Emory's baja and enjoyed the simplicity of the design and overall appearance. I don't feel sorry for your oval (maybe for the mices), your dad has made a good job on it!

yea, the pan was a '62 and has '66 seats

I absolutely love it! Far better to be a bit different from the norm i reckon.

It's been absolutely way too long since I've updated this, so here goes. I have a bunch of stuff to add, so I'll do it slowly.
Engine out...so easy when the rear apron is cut off :-)
This is just the beginning.
Ohh yeah, could you imagine the smell if we tried starting it and all those nuts and mice poop started burning!

After we got the motor all cleaned up we started breaking it down.

nice build you got there, what did you use to clean your engine with?? lots of foam on the engine, I need to do the same to my 40 horse this weekend hopefully. |

I'm usually a purist.
But I could also argue that this Oval was modified and represents a really nicely done period correct rodded Oval.
I'd keep it the way it it. It's a peice of history that stands on it's own.

We just bought some engine cleaner/degreaser at WalMart, using a hard bristled brush to get between the cooling fins and a power washer. Worked pretty good. Then as we took the motor I cleaned everything with carburetor cleaner. |

Yea ya know I kinda wish it was still all in one piece, but it's kinda cool the way it is. My uncles tell me stories of how back in the day after my dad built it everyone wanted to buy it. I guess my grandma used to be able to hear him a few streets away when he would come home :twisted: |

Nice R-code engine, not a lot of them around anymore. If you're going to run the domed 83's, don't fill the tank w/87 octane. This was a 2-year, high-compression engine ('64-'65) and a lot of owners blew them up by being cheap at the pump. That's why VW went to the 1600--you can run them on regular.
I guess this qualifies you for membership in The 1500 Club... |

Next project. Donor '54 front clip.
Painstakingly drilling out every spot weld.
Finally out. Now I just need to do the exact same thing again to the one on the car. :roll:
BAM and it's out. You can see the one I removed from the car (bottom one) was full of rust in the middle and along one of the edges. It was from mouse urine that soaked in the old cardboard trunk cover and rusted through.
It's weird seeing the car like this.
