  View original topic: Oldspeed oil filter question?

I am about to complete the plumbing for this oil filter...



Are there any problems running this filter? It's supposed to use a roll of toilet paper as the filter media. I'm mostly concerned with any low oil pressure that might occur. The oil comes out of the filter through a 1/16" hole into the 1/4" piping.

This was NOT designed to be a full flow oil system. It is a bypass system. A portion of the oil flow is diverted from the the oil pump and then through the oil filter and from the oil filter the oil is dumped back into the oil sump.

A bypass type of oil filter does reduce the oil pressure at the main oil galleys.

I agree.
If your engine looks like the one that you have shown then its a match.

If your engine is for function and you desire effectiveness then I think
the one you show is just a BYPASS filter and
the flow through itself isn't critical because its just a
branch circuit and not the main flow.

Viewed as "better than nothing" it was a vintage thing and the engine oil did all pass through it
eventually over hours of driving.

If thats the era and look I was going after, then I'de have one!
But with that three-pack and bypass sticking proudly out the back of my
buggy... :-&

Its a set up a guy built, it runs on the central carb at low throttle openings and then in the higher openings the extra outside carbs also kick in.

Kinda like a progressive carb, but using a lot of carbs.

There is a long thread on it here somewhere on the samba.

If thats the last roll of toilet paper in the house and it went into your
filter canister...... there could be some issues!

The concern I have is the amount of oil pressure loss by having some of the main galley oil flow go through this filter. I was thinking of checking my oil pressure before I hook this up, then hooking it up, and rechecking for any differences in pressure.


Krusher is right as to how my engine works, it's a multi-carb progressive system. Center carb leans out at about 1800 rpm then the side carbs take over. I've had it for about 8 months and it works great.

Is there some kind of restrictor or flow limiter that goes with a bypass?
Even though its small tube, that is a lot of flow when left un-governed.

In theory, the end-of line pressure spring should just hold back more to compensate the lost volume (to an extent).

Ok it's on and I didn't lose any oil pressure. When I first start I have about 60lbs and than once fully warmed up I idle at 15lbs. I guess the small 1/16" intake hole for the filter keeps the oil pressure high enough to work.

Here's a pic a friend took at a local car show. The plumbing is done and it runs great. I have the return line going back through the stud that holds the dizzy clamp in place on the block. I had to modify a metric coupler nut and drill the stud with a 1/8" hole to make it work. Seems to be running good so far.
