Hi Everyone,
I have a 1972 SB with 1600DP motor. In the last week or so it's been doing something strange. I would be driving along and suddenly the engine seems to be bogging down for a couple of seconds. This only happens once or twice during a 20 minute drive. Sometimes taking off from a stop and sometimes when cruising.
I have adjusted the valves and tuned the carb and checked dwell and timing. Now I am leaning more towards a electrical connection issue. I am thinking any of the following could be a cause

1) Idle cut off selanoid kicking in because of a defect or electrical short
2) Heat riser getting plugged.
3) Problem with distributor causing it to misfire, could be plugs too

Anything else I would be overlooking? Suggestions welcome.

could be crap in the fuel, crap in the carb. along with other things you mentioned. once you rule out the timing/points should tell you wether or not it's electrical or fuel.

just a thought, you may have some crap in your fuel filter that blocks the fuel flow for a short period of time

It'll be difficult to isolate while it's so intermittent. It will be easier to find and correct once it starts happening more often.

I know that's aggravating, and unhelpful but it's the nature of these things.

yea, it sucks that it is random. i would put a volt meter on the condenser side of the coil so i can watch the AC ranges, then pull the air filter on the carb so i could see the fuel jets (if you can) and run it from the back. rev it up, run it solid like you are cruising ( i know there is no load on the engine) and see if you can replicate the issue. if it happens see if you can see a lack of fuel going into the carb or if your volt meter drops.

i suggest this because when my car was dying every 15 to 20 min that is what i did to try and figure out if it was my coil dying or fuel failing.

just a thought.

I am due for fuel filter replacement anyway, so I will do that this weekend. For once I wish it would happened more often, so I can at least have time to see what's going on. Thanks for all your suggestions. I will keep you posted after this weekend.
