50 years, 565 issues--not a bad run...

I let my 25+ year subscription lapse a couple of years ago for some of the same reasons mentioned earlier in this thread, even though I thought the subscriptions were a bargain for a niche magazine. However, being done with each issue after 10 minutes on the pot wasn't doing it for me.

Let's hope the new owners (hopefully not the TEN/Super Street Network) have a budget that will allow Hot VWs to compete on par with the overpriced (but excellent) British VW magazines, but not be priced out of reach of its core readership.

I'm assuming Sand Sports will be "buried." I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

VolksAmerica Fri Mar 17, 2017 3:35 am

VolksAmerica has been going now for a year as a printed magazine - established March 14th 2016. Not everyone has heard of us, that's for sure, but we're slowly getting established with 4 issues a year coming out at $4.95 a mag now. It's been good fun. You'll find us at http://volksamerica.com

But I just wanted to say that as someone who has been in the print industry almost 25 years, it's heart aching to hear when others lose their jobs. I've been on the end of a couple of job loses, but you bounce back. Somehow you just do. Reaching out to anyone who feels they have more to offer perhaps some of you guys would like to talk to us? We're a small outfit, but we're a confident one and we are proud of the work that we do.

Now we've reached a point where we feel more comfortable with where VolksAmerica is heading, and we're gaining in confidence all the time, we'll be looking at supporting TheSamba.com with paid advertising.

^^^Ouch. I feel that its kind of bush league to pimp yourself at the other guys wake.

It has been an almost 8 and a half year long wake  , if going by the original post in this thread. The flowers have wilted.

10 years ago I won a raffle at a car show. I had a choice of a 1 year subscription to HVW or a HVW tee shirt. I took the shirt since I could use it to cleanup after a oil change.

I gave up on hvw years ago due to the inaccurate info, pages of vendor ads and EMPI everything.

Exactly..

It wasn't all shitty. Who remembers when some of the boys went around the world buying up OE VW parts... In fact they turned it into a multipart series complete with pics. I'll remember them at their best. I also liked the girls in bikinis with the cars, early to mid 80s.

Yes, those were neat stories.

For a magazine whose readership was like 99% male, can't believe they gave in to a few vocal "opponents" of bikini gals, and did away with those. I used to post the calendar with the swimsuit gals on the wall of my office at work.

At about that time, a few vocal women complained to Popular Mechanics magazine that the gals on the boats in the lakes were wearing swimsuits !!!

So the correct solution would be to have them remove their swimsuits for the photo shoot!

If anyone wants to relive the glory days...I'm selling a bunch of classic issues.

I never thought of that !!! Actually - I did...

I need to tell how one Friday afternoon, 1980-something, there was a swimsuit photoshoot for some magazine or advertisements on the grounds at work, we had grass and palm trees, sunny Arizona. This was maybe 20 feet outside the giant pane window near my department, and the windows were covered with dark sun film so we could see out, they couldn't see in. Well, the models went starkers changing swimsuits as we watched, our noses pressed against the windows. The models were used to no changing rooms, knew they wouldn't get as many jobs if they "were shy". This was an amazing hour, no one left the window or made a sound, didn't want to alert the models. Too bad this was before cameras were everywhere so no pictures; there was one Polaroid in the entire building back then, but no one wanted to leave his "space" to go get that. Some women employees got on our case for watching, of course. We decided that was the best work day ever.

Well, exactly a week later, they came out for additional photos, and the event repeated !!! 100% true, only about 5 of us from those days were still working there and knew that was true by the time I retired.

It's like a sickness a madness called political correctness that swept the workplaces everywhere, a solution in search of a problem created by the assholes known as HR formerly known as personnel. Man when I started out we had pin up calendars everywhere and at least one of the women mechanics had pics of naked men on her tool box. That's equality :D

Has anyone received the May 2017 issue yet?

Dave Mon Apr 03, 2017 8:32 am

You might be surprised at where some of those "Treasure of *****" actually took place.... 8)
The May issue, according to the new owners, is at the printers right now. If you are a subscriber, and didn't receive the April issue, I would suggest you run down and purchase it, and let them know you had to buy it, and I'm fairly sure they will extend your subscription by one month... try e-mailing :

I was a vw trends guy. i really loved it i only got hot vw when something caught my eye. hot vw is a little behind the times of not featuring patina cars at least before trends went out they started doing that. volksworld is really good but expensive to buy all the time. i do get hot vws to try and support our vw community, but i wouldn't say it's the best.
BTW I remember looking at some old hot rod mags and a friends house and they use to have vw articles in them all the time.

Never got April.

Oldnslow Mon Apr 03, 2017 1:30 pm

I just called Hot VW'S and according to the person i spoke to the printer failed to print enough copies and if you didn't receive one your subscription will be extended one month. Make of it what you will but that is what i was told.
I just hope RK Smith is still there.

That sound more like an excuse.. for insufficient funds ..

Look for your back copy of Sand Sports to take it's place .. wait.. 8-[ is that still around???

The Facebook page is alive and (apparently) well. They are asking everyone who didn't receive the April issue to email the office manager, Sandy Morris (or at least her email address). The grammar in the canned response would drive an English teacher or proofreader nuts.

The April issue is supposed to remain on newsstands through tomorrow. On Saturday, I picked up a copy at one of our local Kroger-owned grocery stores (they had four copies left), so they can still be found.
