I was under my Syncro replacing the starter and I was checking out the gas tank for rust but found none. It seems to be made of a hard durable plastic. Is that stock or was it replaced at some point? Im kinda new to the Syncro world, I always thought Vanagons all had steel tanks.

Im not sure on that one but would be interested to know if a plastic one was available.

The plastic tank is stock. Check your tank straps for rust as they seem to attract it. I replaced mine with stainless ones I found on the Samba classifieds.

So true... Just did all this during/before the 1.8t swapi am working on. I had alot of rust/treat and arrest in that area of the van i have. i por15'ed the entire area behind the engine, trans, and gas tank. Getting the tank in and out was a bitch especially when trying not to scratch or damage a recently painted area. This task (rust romoval, treatment, removal/install of tank and replacement of all lines) was a bitch and has taken way more hours then i have put into the physical swap of the 1.8t so far. ](*,)

I can relate. I did the entire underside of my van with POR-15 along with my suspension parts. Lots of work prepping with a wire wheel, cleaning/degreasing and etching with Metal Ready and then comes the painting. It looks killer and is now protected. It'll break my heart to run it through mud the first time.
