I replaced the original (yes, it was the original 1974 pump), on my bug with one of the brazilian ones (this is the alternator style slanted kind). The pin came out of it and it blew itself apart after about 300km. I got a new one of the same kind, hasnt happened to it yet, but god knows how long it will last. My old pumps issue was the diaphragm inside ruptured. I was wondering if its possbible to repair the old pump, as its pin is likely to NEVER come out, since it has the clips and such. I have checked all the usual places and seen no rebuild kits for the this style pump. I also considered using the diaphragm from the broken pump (I THINK it might still be fine) in the old one, but I cant get the new one open without taking a saw to it... |

Hi Cerot,
My original mushroom-type pump gave out last year - I couldn't find a rebuild kit for it either. I ended up replacing it with a slightly earlier (late '60s), used, rebuildable pump.
If it's a suitable size, perhaps you could drive the pin out of the new pump and use the grooved pin and clips from the original 1974 one instead.
I also recall someone else here making an L-shaped bracket (which attached to the mounting stud using the pump mounting nut) to block the end of the pivot pin and prevent it working its way out.

Exactly, their easy to reseat the pin again once the pump is removed.Only had to do one side because it always walked out the same way. Seems like it's becoming more common everyday. |

I've had very good service from these cheap Brazalian or Mexican fuel pumps on my '74 super. I drive the car 25 or 30,000 miles a year, and never had a fuel pump failure. I carry a spare, of course. Both the spare and the one pumping now are both $20 JC Whitney jobs. (Take that, you JC Whitney haters!!) :D :D :D |
