  View original topic: Question for Wisconsin Dune Buggy owners

Ok...

Have a day off today and thought I would go to the DMV and get my buggy registered and plated.... but a couple of questions here...

My original title (from the PO) says its a 72 VW Beetle... and it was registered as a standard vehicle...

Do I merely have the car retitled as such.... or do I need to jump through all the hoops and have the vehicle inspected and registered under a "Hobbyist" plate????

Just wondered what other WI people have done and what kinda troubles you may have had with your vehicles in regard to the "Law" :lol:

Thanks! I'll keep a eye on this post through the day....

We've registered all our cars with the original beetle title.
No one has ever had an issue with the titling. But we're a rural community and the law enforcement may not be as regimented as metro areas.

I also insured mine (liability only) as the same.
This may be a gray area. I'm certain that the insurance company (arseholes that they are) would raise quite a stink if they had to pay a claim.
Probably by saying we misrepresented the vehicle.

Nut....

that was my idea and thinking.... the original title says 72 beetle.... and I live in Clintonville.... nothing but rural.... but occasionally make it to Oshkosh/Milwaukee/or green Bay in travel....

Just wandered how the man had treated you on this....

Haobbyist tags seem to be a pain in the @ss to get....

Actually, this car

is titled in Wisc as a 1972 Volkswagen, but has hobby plates on it.
Applied for as a 1929 Bugatti replica.

that is different.....dig those wire rims....

how much of a pain was it to get the hobbyist tags for you on that?

I don't have major receipts for the buggy body or any of that.... that was all done by the PO.... so I am out of luck on that part....

Here's the site that tells you about Wisconsin specialty plates.
http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/plateguide/special.htm

And here's the hobbyist form you'll need.
http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/forms/mv2388.pdf
The form also includes a lot of good info.

See the part that scares me is this:

Quote: RECONSTRUCTED - Vehicle:
* Must be constructed from a vehicle at least 20 years old;
* Is no longer recognizable as the original vehicle;
* Must be inspected by a Wisconsin State Patrol Officer.
Make an appointment using the telephone numbers and
locations on other side.
* Application must include bills of sale for all major parts
used in the construction of the vehicle.

I do not have the original bill of sale on the buggy body.... and it was already on the pan when I purchased it.... it also does not list a checklist of what will be inspected or required either....

Hmmm. Good point.

I used this qualifier for my kit.
Quote: REPLICA (Other than motorcycle) - Vehicle
* Is a reproduction of a vehicle originally made by another
manufacturer;
* Must replicate a vehicle at least 20 years old.
* “Kit cars” may be replicas.

Well I suppose I might be able to get that to fly....

If I say that the buggy was a kit....

hmm....

And you pay double the registration a year?

I'm not certian if you'd get that to fly.
The buggy most certianly is a kit, but... not a reproduction of another manufacturer - like Bugatti, Jaguar, and others.
Perhaps you could claim that the Myers Manx was a manufacturer.

I don't understand your question about double per year.

I seem to remember reading that the renewal was double a year or something..... I'll go back and look through that again....

Right now.... I think I'll just register it as the 72 Beetle.... if I am stopped and they require a re-registration or inspection then I'll deal with it at that point....
