It's the cover for the Truck treasure chest lock.

All Single Cabs have this part

Barndoor Panels got those, too. Sometimes Panels didn't have a cargo door handle but that latch cover and a funky "church" key that is Barndoor Panel specific that worked the latch instead. They pop up for sale once in a blue moon.

I have seen a cover there with no handle but how would it lock without a cargo door handle? Does it have a Truck-style locking mechanism?

Hi Ev- No, a regular locking mechanism. The lock cylinder on the bottom and the empty "handle shaft square hole" is operated by the funky church key. I tried to find a pic of the key but couldn't find one. I actually had one on my '53 when I got it but found a cargo door handle to be much more sensible.

This was an easy trivia question...
