View original topic: Beetle Shell Weight?

I've separated the shell of by '67 from the chassis -

Am trying to figure out how many guys (old looking guys) I'm going to need to carry it to where I'm storing it.

How heavy is the body shell of a beetle (with glass?) -- all the numbers I can find are the curb weight inclusive of the chassis.

I dont know about with glass, but i could pick up my shell from one of my beetles and move it across the yard. No pan, just got up in it and stood up. To move it safely, it took me and my buddy.

And we are a coupla scrawny computer nerds. :D

agree with mrme...two people make moving the shell around an easy job.

I had three people help me. Two on the front and two on the back. I would liked to have two more, just because I was lifting it fairly high up to put it on a body dolly. I would have a total of four if I were you. Better safe than sorry.

When I threw my 67 body shell on my dolly, I had my wife lift the front end and I had the back.. picked it up - sideway steps and it went on just fine. (and no my wife isn't from Germany and named Gretchen) :)

So for completeness -I'll reply to myself -- I've seen some folks claim the stripped body weight of an earlier Beetle to be around 240 lbs. We ended up carrying the shell around the house with 4 guys -- and 2 'helpers' to spot and direct.

ah,well i took the body off the pan myself and put it on a stand with casters. no i didnt pick up the whole damn thing ,more like a big heave at the front, ditto at the back . then 3 weeks later i had a coritosone shot in my elbow and after 2 months got full use back. mine weight in at 'to much for one stubborn guy.'

Take the doors off, too and that would make it a little easier

I lifted my 67 body with the doors on and the glass in with one guy helping me. It was at the limit of what we could lift and we both pretty well regretted it. Next time I'll get three or four guys.

I once calculated that the complete body (doors, full gas tank and all glass) amounted something like 600 to 700 pounds based upon a pan-seats-engine-tranny-suspension-wheels and tires given as someting like 1000 pounds and given the unladen weight of 1764 pounds for a '67. Taking the glass and doors off could save a back!

Me and a buddy moved mine, it was with full glass and was not fun. i agree, get 3 helpers or you will be sucking wind. we are not small and we were struggling
