My dad is always talking about the purple gremlin he used to own.

If William Gaines was still alive your friend probably wouldn't have gotten any grief - a request for free admission to the show, perhaps, but no legal attacks. MAD sold out years ago.

That sure is an early car. No cut outs for the tail pipes. Not sure about the heart tail lights, looks like maybe just a shadow on the left one, but who knows?

The additional after market brake light makes me think this might even be a split vert.

I think it has the wrong bumpers for sure.

What ever the year they did not seem to have "more than one" to crash up and shoot more scenes with. And they sure drove the piss out of it!

I still enjoy the movie and really remember loving it when I was a kid.
