  View original topic: Headrest Speakers?

Looking at sound alternatives for my 70 Bug Vert. If I stay with the generator, I am thinking I could enhance the sound with headrest speakers. Years ago I had them in a Miata and they really added good fill sound.
Any one got recommendations on speakers that fit the Bug seat and work well?

Thanks!

Would you just be able to put Miata seats in the vert? I would think it would be less hassle!

Hey, I'm in this for the hassle! Seriously, my goal is to keep a very original look. I'll repadding and recovering the seats. I just thought throwing some headrest speakers might be cool. I'll have a better idea once I get the seats stripped down.
Just wondering if anyone else had given it a try.
I also plan to throw a seat heater in my seat.

Have you looked at the Pontiac Fiero set up? They came with speakers in the head rest from the factory and should give you a pretty good idea on how to build a set up and be able to keep a stock look, I can not remember the exact year but it was in the later 80's. If you go with your factory seats look in to a 3 1/2" slim profile, 2 per seat. Hope this helps,

I did not expect a Fiero to come up in a VW forum. I know quite a lot about these cars but I found Old aircooled VW's more fun and cheaper to fix.
The 1985 Fieros were the only year with the speakers in the headrests. I kinda liked the speakers there.

Here is a picture of what the seats with the speakers look like.

I have a pair of these Fiero seats (w/speakers) identical to the units in the picture above..... already mounted to early
T1 seat bases..... had them in storage for 20 years...... for sale, pick up in Las Vegas (possible delivery to SoCal)

im thinking about headrest speakers as well. Clearwater sells a miata kit with wires and speakers. just carve out some pockets and cram the speakers in. But how to perforate the headrest covers? i emailed j bugs about getting the front of the headrest covers made with perforated headliner type vinyl so the sound would transmit through but they havent answered. there is a guy that perforated leather headrest covers for speakers. "a circle of holes". but that guy isnt emailing me back either.

If you have the patience- it is not hard to punch holes in the needed pattern. All you need is a selection of small punches with a slab of wood as a backer. Small holes to the outside, and optionally, larger holes in the center (like you'd see on headphones). Draw out your galaxy of holes with a crayon- and punch away.

you just gave me a great idea. Using skin biopsy punches to make clean holes. They come in sizes from 2-8mm. Thanks
