Using threads I found in search, I determined that my Deluxe may not be a Deluxe after all. I also looked at the M Code plate, and mine starts with 22, not 24, which indicates a deluxe, right?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=326951&highlight=deluxe

The first numbers are not 24, but, it has the deluxe door panels with chrome trim, deluxe trim, chrome trim around the fresh air vent on the nose, BUT, the red/white paint scheme is different, and there is no evidence of a re-spray. The white is on the roof only. When I bought it, I thought it was a Deluxe someone stuffed camping interior into it. Now I wonder. Why would anyone convert a hardtop camper to a deluxe, and go through all the trouble to put chrome trim on, change the door panels etc.

Thoughts?

Maybe going back a few owners
they sold off the camper interior
& used the bus as cargo van
then sold the bus later
the next owner then puts the deluxe interior into
An empty bus

Maybe it was on its way to being parted out
someone rescued what’s left & put the deluxe interior

just think of how many owners your bus had
& if each one changed a few things .........
one owner puts the trim on
the next takes out the camper interior
the following owner replaces the panels
and so on & so on...........

It’s your turn to make a trade with someone who has the camper interior
In their deluxe

I thought that, but all the deluxe panels inside are there, and who would have moved all that over, and taken the trouble of all the rest?

Very Puzzling.

The deluxe trim came standard on 241 and 244 buses. It was also an option on 221-228 buses with m-code M 521.

68 and 69, sun visor with mirror in it was part of the deal.

Fron 1970 model yr up the sun visor with mirror was not included.

in the early bay years (68-70), two tone deluxe models had white on the roof only and that is original paint i would think. by 71 they also painted white around the windows.

deluxe models have chrome glass frames on the rearmost vent wing, visible in the picture and deluxe trim on the rubber window seals. no one would find all deluxe windows and put them on a camper

i vote converted deluxe

Hiya Steve,

My Bus is a 1970 "fake Deluxe" with the 22 VIN.

I gotta agree with Dan. It really sounds from your description that a PO took the Bus in stock 22 condition and tried to convert it for camping. That would explain the presence of deluxe panels in the interior.

By the way Karl FWIW, my 1970 Bus did originally come with the mirror in the passenger side visor.

Okay, so it must be a "fake deluxe", (thanks for the vernacular) which must have come with the deluxe door panels (Grey, black, chrome strip) but carried the 22.

Eitherway, its not for resto, just Ratty camping. :)

Thanks for the help.

Its a fake deluxe.

Its a fake camper.

Fake to the second power.

Double fake.

Double Deceptive.

Double D.

Through complex math......carry the two......Tits.

Your bus is tits.

Hmm....

and the rants are back...

a deluxe with westy windows seems like alot of work to make a deluxe into a camper. I vote tits like kirk stated. German math rocks. must be the metric system.. ala royal with cheese

In Europe (not sure for US), real deluxe (typ24) were sunroof buses
deluxe parts were optional on classic buses (typ22)

other difference (only for t2a) was that typ24 had black wheels (L41) instead of cream

it seems to me that in Europe only a few typ22 had optional deluxe parts, instead in the US only a few deluxes are real typ24...

typ24 seem to disappear for the 74models,after this year, I had only found Typ22 with deluxe parts...

excuse my poor English

dang,, This thread keeps going. The poor Bus is going to turn into a Yugo .. Converted to a Fake Deluxe Wego with a fake factory mirror above the bed

Hey Bookwus, You'd look less fake with the chrome trim piece around the vent on the front of your Bus. Oh, and by the way, nice augmentation!

Kirk Sun Sep 06, 2009 8:05 am

I bought Steves bus (the original bus posted about). I appears to be a fake deluxe. All the trim, all the interior panels, all the trim indicating deluxe aside from the white paint on the roof only. I ripped out the camper interior and made it a transporter instead.

Well, I did make some other small changes.... ;)

Bookwus Sun Sep 06, 2009 10:57 am

Hiya Loaf,

You have one sharp pair of eyes! It's an old picture. The chrome surround for the front vents is in place now.

keep this in mind, late 60's early 70's , you could walk into a dealer and buy all this stuff. The bays were not often in junkyards at the time and there wasn't aftermarket parts. Not this type.

Things I don't see now days is chrome extended for the siding Door, chrome grills for air vents, chrome rear wheel opening trim, chrome at the gas door or the chrome thing behind the door handles like you see on Bugs. Parts listed where aftermarket, but a dealer item
