What spare parts would you take with you on a longer vacation trip with a split/zwitter? I have seen a topic about this in the past but can't seem to find it...
Thankful if anyone knows where to find it.

I am planning a summer trip to Norway (about 1000 km) with my car and what spare parts should be in the trunk...
Do you have any suggestions? The car is in in good order and are of course lubricated and the rest before the trip. So there is now direct risk of brakedown but it is better to be on the safe side.

The minumun is a correct fan/generator belt and tools to do the job. I would take a bottlejack instead of an original and a wheelspanner. A small bottle of brakefluid and engineoil. A set of points and a condencer. Some nuts, bolts and washers. Some fuses and bulbs. A towing rope... if it is there you might not need it, but if it's not, then most propably something goes wrong.
Take extra caution for crossply tires as those will come easily too hot with long trips and extra loads.
And a lot of humour and time - have a good trip!

Good tips. I also a spark plug or two, a length of ignition cable, and some small easily lost parts like that little slotted washer on the end of the accel cable at the carb.

Tools easily forgotten are spark plug socket, 36mm socket for the gen nut and a voltmeter.

Of course you'd never want to have to use it, but have a fire extinguisher too. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around!

On a recent road trip to Florida I broke down in Pensacola at a red light. I had EVERYTHING.....except a coil. :lol: Had the whole family with me. The coil was bad.
So bring a spare coil.

Yes, in my parts box, I have a spare coil, spare fuel pump also.

Good ideas, like all of the above. I've had 2 different cars where the fuel pump went out on me. I've also got a carburator in my "first aid" kit. You might also add to the list some electrical tape, a few zip ties, and maybe even a little copper wire. And don't forget a good flashlight. If you think it would help in a pinch, take a copy of the Idiot book or some other reference with you. All this stuff fits real nice behind the front seat of my bus, and behind the back seat of my bug. Have a good trip!

Cell phone and AAA ?? :lol: It would be an iteresting thread to start (if not done already) "Unorthodox emergency repairs" ...Our local club was on a cruise and we repaired a members bus with a bread sack "twisty tie" on one of the dual carbs.

Chewing gum... As Bill sayed, this needs an own thread. You never know what happens. Ones I came out from savannah with a tyre repaired by chewing gum! I had tube type tyres and I got a (second) puncture. Nail punctured, but also blocked the tyre and air came out from the hole of valve. The sparetyre was flat, so I asked my friend to give his chewing gum, pressed the valve a bit, put the gum inside around the heel of the valve to block it, tight it with a M12 nut and pump the pressure back. Two hours drive to garage with no added pressure :-)

how funny you mention chewing gum. a friend of mine used chewing gum to plug that dime sized hole on the front of his carburetor when the plug fell out. his temporary fix to get home was on there for 6 years.

At the moment I don't now. I will hopefully going to the Gränsträff this summer. It is a meeting between the Swedish and the Norwegian VW-clubs. But I think it will be somewhere in the southern part, maybe around Oslo or Lillehammer. I guess more information will come during the spring.

Within the ranks of the VVWCA is a group calling themselves, Der Kafer Fahrer, 1945 to 1957. Apparently this was a group that drove their old VWs cross country at times. i remember they had a list of spare parts one should always have available with them.

Also, i have a manual called "Journeys under difficult conditions". This publication gives advice on driving in countries with traffic and climatic conditions which are not usually met within Central Europe...really for harsh conditions, but this list would serve as a great guide.

Of course the should be a set of needed tools also. This list focus mainly on the parts.
Does anyone have any other parts that you think are necessary?
