I have a 1968 baywindow and I have found several 914 1.8L Porsche engines for sale and coincidentally could use a new engine in my bus so i was wondering if it was possible...? if so, what generally would i need to do the swap?
thanks a lot for your answers!! |

Ask your questions and you have more answers than you want.
It's an easy AND difficult swap depending upon how handy you are with fabricating.

You can switch over the cooling to a DTM fan instead of the pancake fan pretty easy. You will have to make a new front engine bar using part of the type4 engine mounts and then make it work...
Dual carbs is a must....and a early 210mm bus flywheel... |

Uh yeah, its possible. I put this 2.0L 914 engine in my Dormobile.
It'll use the T1/bug engine tin Raby offers and you'll need the..215mm flywheel/clutch setup specifically I think if you use the stock transmission.
You'll get it all done and realize you're hammerign the engine to death as T4 engines were NOT meant to turn the same RPM's all day long as a T1 engine. A decent T4 will have twice the torque of a T1 so you'd want the tallest gearing possible.
And you'll have to make the rear engine hanger- and probably grind the stock engine mount brackets off the body- a royal pain.
I would NOT recommend it unless you've got alot of time, and access to free parts, a shop, etc and a bus you want to hang on to logn term.

Sweet conversion!!!
I like the mount bar arrangement, the Vanagon mounts make things so much better and they control the torsional load much better as well.
Lots more people would do this if I could replicate those pieces and sell them... |
