This brings up a good point.
If ever a VW could participate at Pebble Beach, this is the car.

This car should not be ashamed to hang out with these multi mill dollars Bugattis and Duesenbergs. I guess even Jay Leno would be proud to have it in his garage. (Find your own object, Jay!)

Congratulations to the whole team! WHat a find, what a job, what a fantastic result!

Great pictures Axel! I like this one with the "caretaker" in it... What do we know about where/how/when Arunas found and bought this car in the first place?

I wrote about what I know about this subject back in February 2010.

Quote: Today I have a little treat for all the readers of this topic. I have been in contact with Emilis, the guy who initially found the VW38 in rural area of Lithuania. This is the story he told me, and once again it shows how much luck and chance has played a role in this car being discovered.

In 2003 Emilis had to go to a wedding so he drove his beetle there. A friend at the wedding saw his car and said that he knew of one just like it sitting on a farm about 500 metres from the road. The friend said that it has been sitting there for years and that at first he had thought it is an old soviet GAZ-20 “Pobeda”*, but upon seeing Emilis’ beetle, he was sure it was the same type of car. That probably would have been the end of the story, but Emilis was looking for parts for his beetle, especially for a deck lid that he could use, so he decided to go and check it out. As we can imagine the beetle he saw was not really the parts car he was looking for. Still, he took some photos and a video of the car because it looked kind of odd and quite old. Later Emilis showed the video to Arunas - the president of the Lithuanian VW club, who then spent several years visiting it and trying to persuade the owner in parting with it, until finally succeeding in the summer of 2008.

I really hope more facts will be added later on, maybe in the forthcoming book.

Reading all the 168 pages and thinking about over one year job... man... I've learned a lot!

All the team was great, but I really wanna congratulate some specific "guys":

Prototyp Hamburg - wow!! fantastic "papers"
Matthias - holy shit! Man, you're the best!
Björn Schewe - very very very nice posts
Undis - the "best man" of VW38!
Rolf Marschel and his son - need say something?!
Tomasz Sobkowiak - I'm still "wow"...

And, first of all, the kdfkid - Christian, and his father!!!

If I could express all my fellings now in one expression, I'd use a "brazilian" one: p uta que o pariu!!!!!!!

Congratulations, guys!

Now, our "job" is wait for the book...

Undis of corse was also missing - but everybody understand that the distandce between Sydney and Wolfsburg is to long just for a wedding-party. Arunas was there, but not in time because his car had a broken engine on the Autobahn.

For sure, there are some other persons missing on the picture, who didn't had time to come or had more important dates like borning a baby.

I'm sure I speak for everyone following this thread when I say thanks very much for taking the time and trouble to provide all this information and answer all the questions. It's a great thing to feel like we have been right there with you and the team during this tremendous project.

I look forward very much to buying the book when it becomes available.

Have you been taking videos during the project? I think a DVD of the project would be a great thing to have as well.

what i am interested in is the following: which chassis had ben used actually? since the body was on a volga or so on chassis.
were later chassis compatible?
if i may ask.....

The colors left and rigth are the same. On this pic it looks different.
But wait till i make the photosession. You will get a extra print from that!

Reading these last posts sort of seems like the end. But it's not. We still have the interior & all the other finishing touches to be done to fully complete the build. Can't wait to see the interior.

An original VW38 chassis was found, only a small section of the original was remaining.

Did the team ever find out which car this chassis originally belonged to? Was it an actual VW38, or one of the leftover ones used on a Kubel?

Fantastic photo update, I'd love to see what is in store for the interior!

Patty B. Mon Jan 24, 2011 10:14 am

Sorry--I'm bad with names--but how 'bout the fellah who's yard and weeds this car was originally photographed in--is he in the pics or brought up to speed on the car's progress??? (altho he may be watching here on Samba like us!!)
I'll keep watching while the rest of the work continues--thanks to you all for the dedication and a great story!!

I think the chassis they found and used for this car was a '39, not a '38.

the car looks great!

Björn Schewe Mon Jan 24, 2011 11:23 am

The Chassis was produced in 1938, but they made more Chassis than Cars so they used thsese pre-produced Chassis for some later build pre-productioncars. Christians 1940 #66 had the same, but for the later prototypes they welded extra material in the area of the rear shocks. We are sorry that the engine has only a 1939 Casting;-)

cyberdyne systems 101 Mon Jan 24, 2011 11:26 am

More details of the chassis from page 35 of the thread:

Undis wrote:
There is more! A 1938 chassis has been recently found in Germany and will be very useful for making this project as correct as possible. The chassis has been used for a very early Kübelwagen, but is actually a vw38 chassis because of the mounting holes for gas tank holder.

Great find , the bad thing is that your Oval is not anymore the oldest VW in your Country !

Our good friend Guido detected that very early. I hope Guido can take a closer look on the VW38 from above ….
