I see the bus is in skillful hands, now i know why Dirk told me in BC that he's busy for the next months.
BTW, I booked my flight to UK tomorrow, will come back on Friday/Saturday, if the weather allows I'll stay some day at the Belgian coast, it will be an exciting trip.
Are you planning to go to Brighton Breeze with one of your busses, maybe Jan Peter too?
Cheers, marcus |

| After seeing the pictures on your website I am amazed to see how much rust is left after the dipping. Great project though! |

Hi,
here are some of the last welding work pictures, and also pictures after
the KTL coating. The bus is now back from the KTL coating process and
looks really great. Before the KTL the bus was dipped in a special bath to
remove the last scrap rost. Now we begin with the paint job. For every-
body who is interested in the acid bath and KTL coating, here is the
adress!
Greetings from Germany

Here the steps:
- three acid baths to remove the paint
- cleaning bath
- passivation (protective film) of the clean metal
It´s a protection against new rust during the welding job
- welding jobs
- drilling holes in all cavities (8 mm all 80 cm)
- bating bath (removes "every" rust)
- about 6 cleaning baths
- CDP (KTL) coating
- closing the holes (welding)
- paint job
Because of the small holes, all the cavities are now without rust and
KTL coated from inside. Because of the soft acid cleaning, we have no
deformation like we know after sandblasting.
I´m still not sure which color we make. Any ideas somebody :?:
Doveblue is common but really nice
Scottys' link:
CDP (KTL) coating
Cathodic dip-painting (CDP) uses electrochemical properties during the coating
process. The physical principle on which this is based is that differently
charged materials attract each other and thus achieve very good adhesion.
With cathodic dip-painting, a very even coating can be achieved for metal
surfaces and cavities, with consistent layer thicknesses and good surface
quality.
A CDP coating guarantees effective and long-lasting corrosion protection with
high temperature stability and an excellent resistance to chemical substances.
It is scratch-proof and protects against stone impact.
CDP coating is an environmentally friendly coating method as water is usually
used as the solvent. It is highly suitable for automated coating and meets the
automotive industry's high standards.
CDP-coated surfaces provide the best primer for combination with a powder
coating or conventional coating. As a duplex coating, CDP can be applied with
zinc flake, galvanic zinc or zinc alloy layers. Thus CDP coatings can be used
almost anywhere, giving different colours and surface structures.
Thanks Scotty! |

Is this coating similar to the black first layer you see when sanding down original VW buses?
When I sanded my '58-built, '59 model year bus, you get layers like this:
Metal, Thin BLACK LAYER, Light grey primer, darker grey primer, final color paint.
I'm thinking the black layer could be the dip bath seen in some of the factory photos. |
