so when i paid $25 for my 65 bus and/has all 4 bilstein shocks i was not cheated? do they have a lifetime warrenty? my bus sat from 1987-june 2005.

Just put the front shocks on. Soooo, we are going from red front hydraulic shocks to bilsteins. I have no idea if I put those on or they came with the front beam. Just went for a drive........Anyone wanna ride on the magic bus? I cant even tell who made the red shocks. Monroe? Pushing down on the red shocks there was little resistance. Pulling them apart, there was considerable resistance. Typicial hydraulic shock operation. Ok now what would describe a level above speechless for the ride now? I might even throw on the cb performance oil pump and install the filter, fix the choke, clean out the intake manifold preheat, fix the turn signal switch housing from moving, then just drive, and not stop.

The shocks are/were worth $25 (probably). As far as the rest of the purchase, well, I couldn't say if it was a deal or not. :D

Just installed new Bilsteins that replaced KYB in front and coil over shocks in the rear. What a great improvement in ride. Soft, but damped and not too soft. My bus is a stock height, '67, 11 window Standard. I found German made Bilsteins at All Shocks for about $68/each:

http://www.allshocks.com/bilstein/html/show_shocks.asp?make='VOLKSWAGEN'&model='Type%202:%20Bus%20and%20Transporter'&year='1967'

They are definitely worth the price in my book and they are yellow!

I just ordered the shocks from Bilstein and the dampner from Shock warehouse.I paid 273.00 total for the shocks and 114.00 for 2 dampners .I hope they are as great as everyone says they are. :D

I ordered the dampener when this thread first started. They charged my card and six weeks later I called to find out why it never came. They turned the whole place upside down and finally said, "The item is no longer available from supplier". Post if you get the dampener, please.

i called shock warehouse too and they said the same thing....no longer available...just my luck!!

I just got a call from Shock Warehouse and was told that the Dampner that I ordered online last night was discontinued and they don't show a replacement. He did not know a cross over replacement so he gave me Bilstens phone number and said to call them and ask for a replacement part number so I told him to cancel my order. Heres the phone number he gave me for Bilsten 18583865900 . I will try to call in a while and see if they have a replacement part number.

Bilstein does not have a replacment. They discontinued it in 2005. Good luck finding one.

thought just occured to me. It should be possable to make a non bus bilstein fit though. I made an extension bracket for a non bus damper so I could mount it. That might be the ticket till they make them again. The damper was about 2 inches too long I believe, so I made a bracket that bolted onto the beam original mount spot that extended the mount point. Its offset a little and the mount point is just past the beam upright. Works. I have more control on the road than with the stock damper.

The guy at Shockwarehouse told me a BMW steering dampener was very similiar to the Bus model. He didnt have too many specifics

Try not to laugh.
I take it the blue dust cap goes on the top, correct?

One lock washer on each end as well? Any links to torque rating for bolt?

Thanks.
Installing 4 new shocks and want to get it right.

Yep. :D

Are the part number above for lowered or stock height buses?...aside from the newer post s4 or so above with all the pretty blue and yellow pics.

bcampagnolo Mon Oct 17, 2011 8:23 pm

I am going to go out on a limb and and say stock. I have a set all poised and ready for my bone-stock 67.
I hope they are stock 'cause that's what hours of Samba research lead me to.

I hope to do the install in a couple of days. I need a Bently manual or some kind soul to provide torque specs.

Thanks Dave for not laughing (too loudly) and replying. 8)

Some of you put some major CSI stuff in to the $20 dollar shock comment

Looking at these from allshocks, as well. I am lowered, but I should still be able to run these, no? I am not that low, just drop spindles & straight axel...

chrisflstf Tue Oct 18, 2011 10:05 am

Those Bilsteins are for a stock bus suspension. Yes, they will fit a lowered bus, but the shock travel will be reduced by the amount your bus is lowered. So you will be bottoming them out, which isnt good for shocks, without a bump stop
