View original topic: 1960 steering bearing?

Did this model year have this bearing at the top of the steering column? I am trying to troubleshoot a constant horn problem that came on while driving down the road. Worked normally before; stock set up. I cannot see anywhere the column or wire is contacting the body. I have removed the steering wheel and the horn still sounds so I guess the horn ring is not the culprit. Could the steering bearing and spring be the problem? Where is it located and how can I check or remove? I perused some parts suppliers and this bearing is described as for '62-67.

Thanks for any help.

From what I have researched and found, the 60 model did not come with the bearing. I believe it did start with 61 or 62.

I have the same problem,
changed the 2 gromets for the colum, checked the wiring close to the steering box, if I honk, I doesnt work. If I turn a little left, the it Beeps.

Let me know how it turns out! Im clueless too. (or just tired....)

Problem solved! I took off the bracket for the steering column to get a better look under there even though the rubber bumpers and grommet was intact. With the column loose I could see a worn area on the top directly beneath the speedo that was apparently making contact. I put a piece of electrical tape over it temporarily and no more constant honk.

Aha! Thought it might be something like that! Glad you got it fixed. (I was kind of snowed in out at work on Monday/Tuesday and wasn't really able to get online much to follow your previous thread on this topic.)

Oh, and I think the 1960-61 used the same bearing as the later 60s models did. Maybe not, as I see them sold as fitting 62/up, but I thought the bearing was the same, it was just some extra insulation in the spring setup and where the turn signal cancel tab bolts to the steering wheel that isolated that unique 60-61 horn setup.

Does the bearing on a '65 tap out of the top of the tube or down through the bottom? Need to get it out ASAP for paint / clean up and also to install new WW bearing.
