All bus paint fades.
Especially blues and reds.
Newly painted buses look different from old paint, even when the old is in good condition.
That said, your new paint looks wonderful.
Great job.

Hi,
do you think the first paint on the card is L360 #1 (bus) and on the glove box L360 #2 (beetle) ?

the card looks greenish to me so that would be SB#2 for beetles. The bus SB looks all blue, no green hue to it.

Purchased this paint (PPG) before knowing there were actually 2 sea blues. It looks to me like I got the right one. Can reads:

Brand code 12333
OEM code L360

What does this picture have to do with buses?

So what is the deal with my bus? Mine is a realy wierd shade...

Do you think its just because of the fade? Do you think I could get paint that could get CLOSER to my og paint than if I were to get brand new sea blue? When I get my wheel wells welded in along with my vents... Should I get sea blue or a lighter colour to match the rest of my bus the closest?

A friend of mine have a 1964 21 Windows (TopL289).It's original paint patina ,and inside the trap door gaz it seem's to be :
Sea Blue L360 PPG Code: 12333

For My 1965 bus 11 windows (Top L360),
inside the trap door gaz (also original paint)it seem to be :
Sea Blue 2 L360 PPG Code: 12945

I think for bus :
sea blue 1 :combination with L289
and sea blue 2 :combination with L360

Veeeeery happy :D

Bus looks GREAT. But what are the vents in the rear???

In the paint business they call them "ALT Colors" meaning there is more than 1 way to mix the same color.

when i painted my bay bus the original brilliant blue color, there were 3 different ways to mix the color. luckilly my buddy at the paint shop mixed samples of all 3 and compared them to the inside of the gas door before mixing up 2 gallons.

my jeep is the same way its an ALT color with 2 different mixes. the original version fades/oxidizes to red and the other version fades/oxidizes to more of an orange color

I think mine is sea blue #2 but the light really makes a difference in the green hue in it. Here are 2 photos and the effect of the light

Dave,

Love your bus... it looks awesome. I just want to confirm. That was L360 Sea Blue #1 PPG Code: 12333 that you used correct?

Thanks,

RP

Hi,

I had some Sea Blue mixed to touch up my '66 cabrio, which turned out to be too blue and too dark. The formula came from ICI, which was their version of L360.

The whole car was painted in the early 1980's, but the radio blanking plate is in original paint and an excellent match, so I reckon the car is the right shade, and my ICI paint is wrong.

One or two cars have appeared in concours over the years which have been painted with this darker shade, so there's definitely some confiusion out there.

I shall be using the radio blank to get a colour match.

Regards,

Charles.

Wow that looks great. We're just about to shoot my 66 with SeaBlue, I went with the darker, less green, PPG Concept mix of SeaBlue #1. Judging by the underneath we shot a few weeks ago its correct, or at least very close. Cant wait to shoot in just a few weeks!!

In response to a few PM's i've had here's some more info copied/pasted from my thread on another forum, dealing with exactly what paint we ended up using.

The short answer is Sikkens colour book, page 468, swatch number H5.

Those who know me know that I am a Sea Blue nerd   ... we all obsess about something, eh :)

It took ages, and several days/trips, to get our colour right... I cant say yet if we have, only time will tell.

Our painters here in Australia use the Sikkens range of paints - we started off by mixing the colour as per the Sikkens recipe for VW L360 Sea Blue. It was horrible - not even close (I have seen a lot of Sea Blue cars). Turquoise, basically :? Yuck. Life is never simple!

Next plan, we reverted to the Sikkens colour panels and compared with the inside of Daves ute fuel door - an original paint Sea Blue vehicle from an un-faded area:

The above panel proved to be a great match... and the underside was sprayed. I didnt like it... too bright/ turquoisy again. OK for the underside but i didnt want it on the top. Strange how different the 'same' colour appears a) on the panel, b) when mixed, and c) when sprayed and dry. Here it is:

We wanted to get more towards the darker, bluer version of Sea Blue used in the USA (annoyingly there are two versions with the same code)... Daves ute looks very much like the greener "Sea Blue 2" seen on the colour swatches over there. We threw the fuel door aside and went by feel rather than formulas... chose the following (panel 5 - again showed compared to Daves door):

Thats the version sprayed on the badge. I like it, and so far seeing it on this small part it feels "correct" to me :)

Cheers

Just trying to help, here's the door jamb -- it's darker blue --

This is on the door jambs and under the front door panels... Sticker says SeeBlau and blauweisB L289

Now the small section of original paint on the door (outside), weathered, under the smurf blue and black on top of that, is not as dark, so the color fades given 40+ years. Bus came from upstate New York, last on the road in 1990.

Too funny. We seem to have the same obsession and its a darn good obsession!
I am told by some that my dying words will be "Sea Blue, Sea Blue".

That color card is cool, at first glance many of those shades could be considered sea blue.

If I am lucky I will soon be able to post a picture of my one owner all original (family bug, earlier in the thread) 65 sea blue bug with its original paint next to a one/two owner 65 sea blue notchback that is also all original with great original paint.

I am eager to see both cars next to each other to compare the colors. Yea the thread is old and i havent looked at it for a couple years, but sea blue people need this stuff
