Years ago (yes I'm an old fart) you could buy two brake handles that would mount on either side of the hand brake, which would, if pushing them individually, operate the parking brake on whichever wheel it was attached. I want one of these for my Baja. Does anyone know where I could find one (new or used) that would work like this? I don't want a $100 hydraulic job!

They are not as effective as it only uses one brake shoe, but they do work.

While this might work, it is not exactly what I remember. The ones that I remember mounted to the emergency brake handle and had a fork under each of the emergency brake cables. When you would push on the right hand one, it would operate the right emergency brake and the left would do the left.

I realize that this is not as effective as the hydraulic kind, but a hell of a lot easier and cheaper. It will get you out of a stuck situation by stopping the spinning rear wheel!

We had a similar set-up on our buggy when I was a kid. The only difference was you pulled up on the levers. The E-brake was still there and functional also. I haven't been able to find one pre-made, but looking at it, it doesn't seem that hard to fab up. After I get My current project mobile I'm going to tackle this.

Since I have giant bus drums on My Manx, I think they will work just fine.

Actually on a stock system when you pull the E brake cable you actuate both shoes on that wheel albeit not nearly the force applied by hydraulics.
Where most designs loose mechanical leverage is by draging the cable across the stock e brake cam/fulcrum whereas the dual handles don't do this. There is no need for a center handle on the STF page 3 old one. Note the end cap lockouts on each handle. Flip them off and you have a functional e brake per rear wheel.

Here's what I saw on a local fellow off-roaders baja the other week. No pictures, sorry, but imagine if you will a picture... (please stop singing "when the doves cry" by prince...)
The stock e-brake setup. But in place of the rear pin that holds the actual brake lever in place, use a bolt. On either side of that bolt (the outer most edges) you put anoter lever that angles forward. On each opposing lever there's a tab that the e-brake cable is bolted or threaded into. On the main e-brake lever there will be a plate that catches both "steering brakes" as it is pulled up. If I can work out a drawing I'll posted it unless someone else beats me to it.
This in actually something I'm planning on doing as soon as i can get around to it. I miss having an e-brake, and from watching a buddie that has steering brakes, I'd really like to get some of that world also.

Ok, I looked at the STF page and saw the pictures. Basically take the picture below and place it on either side of the original handle.

I just got off of the phone with CIP1. The item that Glasser was referring to is only the base and handles for a hydraulic set-up, not a mechanical steering brake! :(

I have a set of those in my garage.....I kept them from 1985!
I had to trim the ends down and redrill them for the set-up to work on my 67.

I have the exact same handels and I am planning on using them on my '67 Baja build.

I have no intention of sliding my Baja sideways, just use it to give enough resistance to make it out of a stuck position with a swing axle.

so does that go around the stock e-brake handle so you have a left right all setup, or replace the handle and just leave you with a turning brake? if the former, I'ma build meself two.

You've got it, fusername! One lever goes on each side of the existing hand brake (and housing) then the small ring catches the E-Brake cable on each side after it goes throught the hand brake handle. You can either pull up on the hand brake as you normally would, or just pull up on the left or right to brake that rear wheel by itself! Isn't that clever?? :wink:

I had a pair like that in the baja, as i recall, i modified them a bit to fit better between the seats. hope these pics are of help.

OK, the shipping to AZ is probably less from Portland than Iowa, but I'd guess that my main question for both of you would be "Will it fit in a 69?"
