| Does anyone know the difference in the oil pumps other than the stud size. I believe that the 6mm does not go in as deep, but want to verify. |

| I "think" the 6mm have 21mm gears and the 8mm have 26mm gears. |

stock pumps are 21mm
Heavy duty pumps are 26mm
Pumps that are too big for most have 30mm |

| I forgot, early pumps have a shorter shaft that engages the cam and are called "flat cam" pumps, you can tell if it is a flat cam if it has a bolt on gear or only 3 rivets. Later cams with 4 rivets are "dished" and need a longer shaft. |

| I’m swapping engines in a bug with auto stick. Going from flat to dished cam. So I exchange the short gear/shaft in the oil pump for the dished cam part? |

I guess that's your only option since autostick oil pumps are NLA. |

| Use some clay on the end of the driven pump shaft and do a mock up assembly then remove and look at the clay impression so you can see how much the drive engages. you want enough engagement, but dont wont zero clearance between the pump drive shaft and bottom of the cam gear slot. clay can be used for this purpose, clay aint only for Gumbie. |

I did similar like 3 decades ago on a non-auto oil pump; actually it was a Claude's Buggies/CB Maxi2. I needed a Maxi2 for an engine with a dished camshaft gear, and would've ordered brand-new but CB was out of them/backordered at the time. So I took out the 26mm too-short gear and bought locally a 26mm VW oil pump for a dished cam gear, and used its long gear in the Maxi2.
3 decades, and it' been OK so far !!! |
