View original topic: L412 Diamond Green Interior (information needed)
Buba Thu Apr 30, 2009 6:16 pm

Hi Folks, I recently bought an april 1957 Us Spec oval, It's Diamond Green with green leatherette interiors.
I will buy a carpet kit and headliner and I can't find any information about wich color is the correct one for my car.
On the WW table, there is no option for the green interior.
Any information will be usefull for me to decide wich one I must buy.

Thanks
Marcos

Garwood lists 278 grey beige for the carpeting and 410-H121 light green for the headliner. However, there are several documented errors in Garwood's color charts, as much of the research for his books came from personal notes and memory, and not necessarily VW.

I'd wait for John Henry to chime in, as he probably knows more about diamond green ovals than anyone else on this site...

Thanks!!, I'll wait John's answer too to see if his information agree with yours.

I think grey beige is right, and I put a kahki colored headliner in my DGM '57 (see thebugshop.org). I based those colors off the colors of what I took out of the car that was original.

I don't think light green for the headliner is correct, it certainly was not what was in my '57...

Thanks John.
Where do you bought the carpet and headliner on these colors?

I bought both the headliner and carpet from Wolfsburg West. I was very happy with the quality, the carpet is the German Squareweave.

Ok, but in WW the headliners are avialable on beige and grey (not Kahki) and the carpet on Tan, Oatmeal (beige/tan), grey and characoal (not grey/beige).
Do you use some of these colors on stock or some time ago WW had more color options?

Thanks
Marcos

the headliner was the beige one from WW (khaki was the only color name I could think of at the time...). The carpet I used I *think*" was the oatmeal.

Here you have some photos of my oval, and the fuel dipstick wich come with it. It appear to be original, but I'm not sure, what do you think?

Thanks

I'm getting ready to paint the rims on my '57 european L-412 Diamond Green Metallic beetle. I had always thought the correct colors are L87 (Ivory) on the inside and L412 (Diamond Green) on the outside. However, when I checked the 'Car of the Century' (pg 405), it indicates L87 Ivory and L319 Green Metallic. Could this be typo; should it read L412? For that matter, I can't even find L319 Green Metallic anywhere - including on this website at the Technical - Paint/Upholstery section. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Dan

One of the problems with accesory paint (read rims) is that you can't find the color. I went through the same thing with my prairie beige oval and others have gone through the same issue with their coral red ride. You wont have an issue with your outer rim matching your body color if you choose to do so.

However, a quick check of glasurit's website http://color-online.glasurit.com/
and L319 comes up for several paint lines.

Finally, and most importantly I was provided VW documentation that states a diamond green car would have inner rim L277 silver beige & outer L211 bluish-green. L277 is in glasurit's database L211 is NOT :(

You can see that info posted in this thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2...highlight=

Dan,

I once owned a "one family" owned August 1956 L 412 diamond green Euro Oval (see photo) and the original wheels where ivory outers and slightly darker metallic inners. I'm pretty sure the colors darker than diamond green.

The hubcaps also had diamond green emblems painted as original.

Many European cars had the reverse painted wheels, don't know why? But I've seen quite a few one owner Ovals while I lived in Germany and that's just how it was.....

Ohh I did notice a mistake on that list though for the 1957 L 331 horizon blue cars.

The wheel outers were L 33 grey-blue and the inners L 87 ivory white at least on all post April 1957 L 331 cars. (my car is #158xxxx) and my rims/wheels are 100% original to the car.

1956 horizon blue cars had horizon blue outers.

Page 405 is one of the pages corrected in the second (1987) printing of Volume 1.

The 60 copies in the first (1986) printing show the body color for the outer rims. Garwood mentioned they "were based on refinishing charts used by dealers...[and] were revised thereafter..."

For Coral Red cars, the L74 Red Brown/L87 Pearl White combination is correct as shown on the revised page, so I suspect the L319/L87 combination is also correct for Diamond Green cars.

There are many more pictures of my car in the gallery, but all 5 wheels are OG date coded to the car and OG paint.

They are darker than Diamond green and are NOT metallic. If you would like, I can take some close up pictures later today and post those.

Not harshing on Garwood at all, but an earlier poster (IN2VWS) has the documentation. The information he posted previously in this thread is correct and I repost the portions of the documents again from the other thread I referenced which I hope he doesn't mind.

L277 and L211 as noted by an owner with og rims - not quite body color (as was often the case) and unless you can get a color match, there is no paint formula.

Dan, I bought another Diamond Green Oval, this one was in very original condition but repainted.

This is when I found it.

When restored I found the original paint on rims, and it's very similar to detroitjohnny's car.

Here you can see it.
