View original topic: Three Holes in Transmission - Detent Springs?

So my transmission on my 1960 Beetle was leaking forever and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from, until I pulled it out.

Toward the nose cone section there are three small threaded holes. I've checked online and in my manual but don't see anything that shows what those were for.

The car shifts and drives fine with those three holes open. Can I plug them, or do I need to replace whatever is supposed to be there? If I do need to replace, what goes there?

Plug 'em. I used a wooden dowel coated with Goop.
Your holes are threaded? Mine weren't.

I used the Permatex black RTV to plug them up. When I got the trans, they were just caked with dirt and grime(came out of a Baja).

They might not be, I just assumed they were since I had three random holes there.

Thanks for the help, I'll plug 'em. 8)

Do not plug them too deep, or you could bind the shift rails.
The original plugs were plastic, and only about 10mm long.

Anyone know what the diameter is?

I've tried to find the plugs for a long time. Maybe someone still makes the replacements which are aluminum and driven in with a punch. I hear tell of 'em now and then but no one has 'em. Don't think I could ever get the nose cone clean enough to use RTV. I think it might be hell to get them all in without removing the trans. Let us know if you find a source.
