| I was wondering, in all the years of working on VW's I never took notice as to whether on not the typ 1 trans axle has a vent. The reason I ask is because this will be the third time in under 3k miles that my drivers side axle seal has went bad. I was wondering if it might be building up press and blowing the oil past the seal. It only does it on the drivers side. This time it wrecked my brake shoes. Idk wtf the problem is. Any suggestions? |

| Vent is on the nose cone. When you did your axle seals did you change the end cap (bearing retainer) as there are different sizes where the bearing sits in the cap (3mm to 12mm). You must measure the part of the bearing that sticks out of the tube to get your end cap size. As for the seals, after you place the backing plate on the tube the big rubber o-ring goes on first then one gasket, with the small drain whole facing down. Then put big washer on axle then small o-ring. Replace seal in end cap, lube seal, place seal race flat side out in end cap. Slide on axle then 4 bolts end tighten. Good Luck! | I believe the Type 1 gearbox has a small vent hole at the nose of the gear casing, and the nose cone allows for the small hole to be exposed. Its pretty small and it located near the center top part of the housing just about at the nose cone. |

Are you installing the axle boot correctly?
- seam at 3 or 9 o'clock
- tighten with axle loaded
- push small end towards center before tightening clamp
- good quality boot |
