Just got a call this morning from my boyfriend who is broken down, he caught a ride down to the Classic with a friend with a 79 westy. Turns out the #3 exhaust valve had the end break off. The piece was lying in there near the rocker arm. That valve was not opening due to the end breaking off. Vince was trying to screw the adjusting screw in to adjust it, but then it was screwed so far in there wasn't enough room for the keeper nut. I suggested to put the nut on the other side of the rocker arm but there may not be space ? Awkwardness.
It just got new heads recently, I am not sure if this engine is hydraulic or not.
So... brand new heads...
broken valve,
WTF!
Is this a common issue? |

I'd be worried that the grooves for the valve spring keeper wouldn't hold anymore.

Depends on the heads used, and/or the builder. ;) |

if the heads are new then they are made by AMC and the valves are not very good out of the box on these. the keepers do not fit well, for one thing, and the minimum acceptable for using these heads is to correct the keeper fit and replace the valves. seems ridiculous to have to service a brand new head, but that's the reality. |

| Sorry to hear you are finding this out in Yreka  That's not really a roadside job to fix. |

Turns out Vince had replaced all the valves before installing the head. I guess he knew about that deal with quality new parts. :?
So one of the new valves that did not come with the head had broken.
They only had a minimal tool/parts kit with them.
Chris House has since earlier this morning hooked them up with tools and a new valve. Thanks Chris, you rock!
Vince and Greg had the head off, replaced the valve, and the head is being torqued back on right now.
Cross your fingers!

| They didn't stop by the Blackstar Campout Friday night, but showed up at the OCTO show at 2 am Saturday. That's about 650 miles south of Yreka. |

the little piece of the valve that broke was in the bottom of the head, under the rocker arm.
The keepers were still holding the valve in place.
But with the top broken off, the valve was not opening, the rocker didn't move it. This caused a loss in performance. |
