Can someone tell me how the tin behind the pulley is attached? All I can see is a bolt behind the pulley, but that is it. Can it be done with engine in the car - I think I have something behind the pulley and this seems simpler than trying to pull the pulley off.

Guess what, the pulley has to come off.

there's two M6 screws and yes, the pulley needs to come off.

While you have the pully off....you should repalce it with a nice shinny new one.

So can the pulley be removed in the car, or does the engine have to come out?

You can do it with the engine still in the car. You'll need a large screwdriver and a 30mm socket to remove the nut.

Be sure to check the torque table when you re-install. It is only 40 ft pounds or so when it goes on, but please do not take my word for it, check in the manual.

To hold the pulley in place so it doesn't move, and to pry it off the crank once the bolt is off.

Of course, none of this applies if a special pulley removing tool is used.

Of course, none of this applies if a special pulley removing tool is used. Don't do that. It damages the pulley.

What do you have behind the pulley? Is this the only reason you want to remove the pulley tin?

I know there is a 10mm socket back there that accidentally dropped and I am thinking there may be a screw back there as I have a clacking sound coming from the pulley. At least I can eliminate the screw theory if I can get back there.

Nevermind - I am an idiot - I didn't look very carefully under the car last night and it had spit out the socket I thought was back there. Sorry for the trouble on the subject.

I will start a new thread to try to track down my problem.
