You remove the covers and gears. With it all together you set the "t" in the pump and turn it till it is firmly seated in the oil galleries. Turn the nut and its out. 2 new gaskets and you are on the road. |

I use a small mallet and tap it back in gently. This is a really easy job and you will realize it once you get into it.
I have never done this on an engine with oil in it but I would assume you would drain the oil first. |

forget that puller...
Do you know how to take the pulley off?
once thats off, remover the pump cover loosen the bolts above and below the pump. check the sides of the pump these two flanges, or tabs. use a screw driver or prey bars. top and bottom. the pump will slide right out
those empi pullers are made wrong one screw up and the pump is history.
Be damn sure you put the right gaskets in the right place.. thich one between the pump and case.. Thin one between the cover and the pump no sealer at the cover |

Dont do this  .... magnesium is a very soft metal and there is a good chance of gouging it and you will have a hell of a time getting it to seal again if you do. |

If think you must pry stop. Cut a little notch in the left and right sides of the pump and gently tap it out. My puller is home made and works great. If your leak persists even after the case and pump are clean wipe a VERY VERY thin film of silicone on both sides of the block gasket. I use Ultra black and it appears as a transparent smear not a bead. Tighten the case and pump nuts in steps and evenly to get a good seal. Torque to spec. If it leaks from the cover you can wet sand the cover and pump body on a piece of flat glass with 400 grit sand paper. |

sometimes I just have to laugh my ass off at you guys..
Pumps are not made of magnesium ..why do you think the tabs are cast into the pump ??
Why has no one said a thing about loosening the top and bottom case bolts at the pump ?
The word PRY does not indicate, using a tire Bar and a 6 foot pipe.
I'll say this, if you don't know how to remove a VW oil pump without that puller, you havn't done many VW engines.
Butt then I don't shit. I've only been at this since 1963 |

From one old man to an older old man, Laughter is great medicine.
You must be getting old you already told him to loosen the case bolts above and below the case in your first post :) . Sorry I could not resist.
Many pumps no longer have the tangs cast in them. Your right there is pry, Pry and PRY just like tap, Tap and TAP. He could be lucky to have the one someone decide to use half a tube of silicone to install. For that problem removing the four oil pump studs and rotate the pump a little clockwise and counter clockwise after loosening the adjacent case studs might be best. I bet the pump was in and out faster than all the time we have been BSenings on this Samba post. Nathan were we of any help?
By the way Happy Fathers Day to the Samba dads. |

I am a year older than my car and remember a large VW dealership around Dayton or Columbus that was always FULL of new beetles as a kid. 8) |
