Hello,

I tried to use search but no luck, propably due my poor english ..

Question goes: During on our long Eurotour to BC and EBI4 from Artic circle (5500km) we found out that reduction boxes are pain in the ass. Is there any change to remove reduction boxes and tranny, change those to freeway flyer tranny and still keep stock height? I have removed reduction boxes from my -66 DC, I know what happens to ride height, so we would like to keep stock height on Grossraum.

Thanks in advance,
Pete

What year of bus and type of tranny are you using now? Big nut or small nut? If it is running an early small nut, get a later big nut tranny to put in it. If you're already using a big nut and still want more speed. Get a freeway flyer and put your stock big nut boxes back on it. That is plenty for a stock height bus.

What kind of speed are you getting now?

Grossraum is -66, and it is my friend's car so I don't have any clue about the size of the nut. What is sure it is totally original and same is with the transmission.

Sorry forgot mention about the speed, on autobahn around 70km/h, on 14% hills 60km/h with Heinemann trailer

It is possible that the transmission has been changed in the past 50 years, or the motor possibly is tired.
a stock 66 bus should be happy at 100km/h on flat ground

You need to do an irs conversion to the rear to keep it near stock height with the reduction boxs removed.

But you dont want to use a freeway flyer trans with no reduction boxes in a bus.

The general term "freeway flyer" is when you have a beetle, replace the 4th gear with the long bus 0.82 gear.

This gear without reduction boxes is far to long for a bus.

If you only doing 70km/h then your engine having a severe lack of power is the problem, and it will be slower with a freeway flyer and no reduction boxed.

As greg says you should be able to cruise at 100km/h with the gears you have. I know friends who have large engines and have kept stock 66 bus gear with reduction boxes and run 100km/m+ on the freeway happily.

You need a engine with more power, leave your gears alone.

Grossraum? Is this a regular bus. Highroof? widebed truck? A bus with trailer and loaded with people and their camping gear for a 5500km expedition is likely to feel underpowered.
What is BC? around here that is British Columbia, but there?

Is there a thread on your adventure? Pics? :D
