| I am running a 1679 with a 34 PICT 3 carb. The other day I went for a a ride and when I got home and pulled in the drive the wife came out said she could smell gas in the house. Have not had this problem before. I am not good with tuning carbs if that is the issue. Any ideas on why it would be running like this? |

I'd check the fuel lines 1st and make sure you carry a fire extinguisher.
If this is the 1st time that your wife smelled it, maybe maybe it`s time to read up on this! |

YES, every vehicle should have a working fire extinguisher in it. Either that or at least a bag of marshmellows...
Check every fuel line, starting with the filler neck of the tank and working your way back. Double check the connections on the carb and the fuel pump. The brass tubed are merely pressed into the cast bodies of the carb and the older style pumps. They can pull out and cause a fire. Best fix is to remove the brass tubes, roll them between a file and a block of wood, put red locktite on the end, then tap them back in. I also use safety wire on the hose clamps to further secure the fittings. This is a major problem with older VWs.
Does your oil smell like gas? If so, you probably need a new fuel pump.
Once you have determined that the problem is not an external fuel leak, check out this page for tips on tuning:

| Fuel shut off valve may not be working. (long round thing on side of carb with a wire running to it) |

I thought that was the choke, glad i run a progressive, geesh (blonde moment)
Had you maybe just filled it with gas? I tend to spill some once in awhile on the hood. |

Choke is the short flat round thing on the other side of the carb, above the generator, with a wire to it. |
