Alright folks...
Another post from another lost and confused VW enthusiast! I am in the process of restoring my 69/67 VW SQB. I am doing a body swap from a 69 to a 67, I removed the wiring harness and after doing so, it looks like a GIANT rats nest! This harness has been cut/spliced in so many places by the PO, that it is not worth trying to re-use. Has anyone had any luck in finding a complete wiring solution? Thanks in advance... |

Is the wiring from the '67 or the '69? When I look at my '69, the wiring is a mesh (from the factory) of the '69-70 and 70-71 Bentley diagrams. Although they're similar, the both have some very individual quirks that show up in my car.
Good news: as long as it's OEM wiring, the wires are very specifically color coded. When I bought my 2nd Bentley manual (wore the first one out), the first thing I did was buy a cheap set of colored pencils. I colored in the wires on the diagram to make them more legible when I was tracing their paths. It's easier to read that way when you're upside down in bad lighting under the dash.
Grab a roll of tape and a pen and start IDing the wires, I guess. See what may be salvageable and what is clearly unsafe. |

If you copy the wiring diagrams found here on The Samba, to a floppy disk, or thumb drive, and then take it to your local copy center. They can print it in 11 x17" format, and laminate it for you .
Then it is a large enough format that you can tread it easily while under the dash of the car, and with the lamination, you can write on it without ruining it.
It cost me $9 for the last one I did.
the diagrams here on The Samba are the color version. |

I couldn't care less- I suspect I'll go through at least one more Bentley before I'm done...
I've printed thesamba diagrams before. My Bentley holds up better. |
