thank you. it's going to be fun to make my car look correct (minus the exhaust ... until I get a nice A1 system with stock-ish tips :) ) |

Well, looks like I am down to the paint store today to pick up a pint of Glasurit Type 22 L33. Interesting thread, still like my Horizon Blue Wheels but will do a little experimenting on a spare rim to see if I like the look.

I made an order with Kris at Tower Paint, and he says he cannot find any information on L33 Greyish Blue
Do you know the equivalent PPG code, or some other component information that would give Kris enough to mix that particular color?
THANK YOU! |

So, I went to
http://color-online.glasurit.com/
where I usually search for color recipes and punched in L33, type 22, from years 1953 to 1990. The only thing that comes up is a red color for Toyota.
I went to another site that I like for color information
http://www.pre67vw.com/colours/
and did a search for L33, here is what I get, L330 through L338, take your choice.
http://www.pre67vw.com/colours/default.aspx?keyword=L33
I also searched that site for blue colors and here is what I found
http://www.pre67vw.com/colours/default.aspx?cg=3
Nothing specific for L33
Looks like the only blue VW colors during that period were L232, L31, L331, and L335.
Am I blue?????????????????? No, I still like my rims the same color as my body. |

During what period?
L335 (Capri) is big window period
L31 (Dove Blue) is a bus color
L331 (Horizon Blue) is Oval period
L232 ??? not familiar with that one. Do you mean L233? |

If you can't get the formula for L33, what about using L30 from 1960. It is pretty close.
Click the picture, it gets bigger.

Wow thank you for finding a close match! I have passed that information to Kris from Tower Paint. I will let you know if he finds it for my wheels.
Thanks again |

IN2VWS: can you see other shades that are close, and perhaps more known?
From the Pre67 website, I noticed that the following colors are pretty close:
L335 Capri Blue/Capri (1957-1965)
L434 Fjord Blue/Fjordblau (1958-1969)
How close do these compare in your database / printed catalogs?
(thank you) |

THANK YOU
Unfortunately Kris said these formulas don't help because they don't have that type of paint... :(
Do you know of another store I could order these colors from, perhaps who would have the paint type and could mix them?
Thank you

Still no L33 Greyish Blue, or L30 Grey Blue, but Kris / Tower Paint told me today that he has the following 2 colors which seem to be the closest out of the pre67vw website... But it's hard to tell from photos (saturation, white balance may be off...)
Any advice on which to pick, perhaps you have seen them in person?
L335 Capri Blue
L434 Fjord Blue
Original wheel color

IN2VWS was able to tell me that L225 Jupiter Blue is very close to L33 Greyish Blue
Tower Paint has L225, and will be sending me spray cans for my wheels.
Thanks guys |

Interesting it is labelled L33103
Not just L33
Maybe that's why Tower/PPG/Dupont couldn't find it on any list |

The label on the pen looks like L331,3.
Which is Horizon Blue. |

I ordered my L82 Silver White and Jupiter Blue L225 spray cans...
My wheels ... Bought from someone who had them done black. The black comes off really easily with very light sanding, so I will probably have them sandblasted and start from scratch.
What's the best steps from there? What's the best tutorial/thread/article to take me from bare sandblasted rims, to rock hard 2 tone rims (using my spray cans from Tower Paint? I am a noob, but I learn fast.
Thanks |
