View original topic: '76 Type IV Engine Tin

I've got a '76 Camper with slim type iv heaterboxes (411 style) and i'm missing the bottom engine tin. My question is, are the tin from early type iv engines and 411/412 the same? My brother is going to be going to a car show this weekend and if I could find out to let him know that would be good.
I switched to the slim heaterboxes to get abit more power out of the engine as per a few other posts on thesamba :-)

Thanks,
Jay

I can't speak for the bottom tin, but I know the rear tin (bumper side) on a 411 is a 2 piece unit instead of 3.....I had that on my bus when I got it, impossible to remove in a bus without bending the pieces.

You might want to cross post this query in the 411 forum?

I might just do that. I figured since alot of people have changed over to those style heater boxes they would have to of changed the tin aswell.

I'm still mystified by these power adding slim heat exchangers, more power?? Where are these posts?

I think it's a misconception caused by the fact that these heat exchangers are popular for type4 into type1 or type3 conversions due to the fact that they are smaller and easier to fit.

The exhaust flow through these is almost identical to that of '72-'74 bus heat exchangers exept that they are a wee bit shorter, which is no advantage on the already short exhuast of an air cooled vw.

Of course they do flow better than '75 and later bus exchangers, as do the '72-'74 bus exchangers.

If it was me I would go with the '72-'74 bus exchangers as the lower tin is easier to find. I also don't live in Florida so I like a little heat once in awhile.

are the heater boxes different? between the type iv cars and the type iv engine used in the early buses?

Yes..... size difference. Top one is a 72-74 left, lower one is a 411/412 left when it came with the BA4 heater. The BA4 heater needed pre-heated air. The hot air tubes for the blower fan are also in a different spot.

Thanks Karl, pictures is just what I needed. I will be able to look at my heater boxes tomorrow to figure out which one i've got so I can start looking for the correct tin. Thanks again for the help :-)
