A lot of the "early" people do not "diss" the fat chick engines?
If you are going to "diss" the fat chick, take that dual port engine out, and go back to your original 36hp or 40hp.
My Buses aren't stock, but my '59 Beetle has a 36er in it 8)
What I've always hated are people that say "Well, I drive a bay because I can't afford a split, or I have a fatchick Beetle because I can't find an earlier car" That's bullshit. If I can swing having them, anyone can. If it's what you really want, get it. Now if you really like bays, struts or 412s, that's great. Drive the hell out of them. If that's what really gets you going, then you won't care what others say about it. No matter what you drive, there'll be someone who don't like it. There are plenty of people who hate the the fact that my Beetle is lowered with a narrowed beam or that my Bus no longer has reduction boxes. Do I care? Nope, I like it that way and I make my stuff for me and no one else. |

Two words: German Look. If I were ever to get a Beetle, it would be a Super. Oh, and curved windshield preferably. Nothing else would do. |

I like my cars and my woman with some meat on them, :) I have had earlier models and liked them also. I'm not much of a super beetle fan but, it all comes down to personal preference. Any aircooled VW is cool to me really. |

I think you hear from the farthest ends of the spectrum on either side.
The late fringe crowd says you're all haters and snobs,
the early fringe crowd says they're fat and I'd never own one.
For most of us in the hobby...if its aircooled- to each his own and if you like it...
Who cares?...
Now watercooled...that's another thread! |

gbsmallie wrote: I thought this was a discussion on the overall car, ie "fat chicks". I would gladly "diss" plastic air boxes, carbon canisters, autosticks, crappy fuel injection, and other smog related "advancements" that most late-model guys themselves take off those engines or are already long-gone. Besides, we are now talking about updating/ customizing an earlier model. I dont know too many that would install a plastic dash cover or giant impact bumpers on their 62 ragtop.
You sound like someone who is just trying to impress the "Early crowd". That seems to be the main motivator behind late model hate, trying to look cool to the guy next to you with an older car. "late models" are 40 years old now, thats far older than early models were when they first became "vintage".
As for all those advancements. Of course no one puts impact bumper on a 62, that would look stupid, just like early bumpers on a 74, or Bajas in general. There seems to be alot of early cars with late model things like seat belts, metallic paint, disc brakes, dual circuit master cylinders,CD players, 1600cc motors, 12 volt electrical systems etc. So apparently late models are not that bad.
Plastic air boxes and carbon canisters, nothing wrong with those unless your to lazy to learn how to change a filter and run new hoses.
BTW, 65-67 beetles dont really qualify as early with their big windows and big tail lights, and more modern upholstery, the plastic knobs and flat head lights on a 67, ball joints , bigger motors, fat chick popouts, metal sunroofs etc. |

I drive a fat chick bubble window and "I" refer to her as a fat chick.
No hatin' about it. She's just a large girl in my eyes.
I embrace the fatness.
Super beetles gained my respect several years ago when the "German Look" was popular and they were outfitted with lowered performance struts and T-4 +2.0L engines and tearing up road courses with Porsche and BMW's 10X the co$t. |

I guess what I really hate are people who whine about someone not liking their car.
I had a local friend who loved fat chick Beetles. That's all he'd drive. He told me "I don't know why you'd want to drive that early car" and he had his many reasons for liking the late Supers so much, all valid opinions. Just as my reasons for liking earlier stuff are.
It didn't mean I still didn't speak to him at events, I always made a point to, he was a cool guy. He liked what he liked and didn't care what anyone thought about it and I could respect that. He recently passed away as a matter of fact and I miss seeing him and that SuperBeetle pull up to our events. |

Depends where you are. Anything in my neck of the woods is a rusted out pos, I could never afford the time/money to patch up an early. I just happened to find a '73 Super up here with literally NO RUST. It was $800 I had a $1500 budget. You want to find a pre '67 in AK for less than $1500, GOOD LUCK. |

Then neither do 64-67 buses with their lame ass rear hatches, 14" rims, heat seamed upholstry, big tailights, fried eggs and 1500's. |

Back in the day I used to buy fat chicks just for the motors and gearboxes. The rest would be sent to the crusher or given away to some poor lost soul with no self-esteem to buy a skinny chick. |
