View original topic: Which exhaust? Single/dual quiet pack, or stock Page: 1, 2  Next

I have been looking through the posts, but haven't found any that answer my question. I have been working on my 1969 camper, and figured being able to see daylight through my muffler is not the best thing. I have read the posts about staying stock, dual/single quiet pack, but what I would like to know is which would be the quietest choice. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

single quiet pack for better performance and quietens.
bugpack is has a good priced one, make sure the header and muffler line up right if you buy used or from a swap meet.

I think stock is quietest. My buddy has one on a 63' and it is quiet. Are we talking type 1? Cause I am. I have some empi chinese thing, it is not quiet, but I like it.

A good single quiet pack with 1-3/8 collector is fine. Dual QP on much larger motors.

I have a single quet pack on my 76 westy and its great I bought an Empi one and of course the black paint burns right off so you are left with a rust colored muffler...uuggghhh So I went and bought silver high temp paint and it looks like a regular midas muffler

All those mufflers have shit paint on them unless its ceramic. You can scratch it off with your fingernail... that's why you paint it or get it ceramic coated.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I called one of the better known bus part suppliers, and I was told "why would I want to put that crap" (single QP) on my bus. It was suggested that a Monza would be better. Any ideas from out there in Sambaland.

Wow - the last EMPI Monza style that was sent to me did not have a very good fit and the welds looked pretty iffy.

I sent the EMPI back and went with what I'll guess is a "crap" (single QP) from BugPack. The single QP has been on my 71 since 2005 and hasn't fallen off yet.

My only gripe - It is too loud. -

Do not scrimp on any type of exhaust system. Gasket hardware inclusive. Get the highest quality German muffler installation kit you can find. Monza style is for Beetle only. Your exhaust should exit from the outside corner whether it be the stock muffler assembly or header with whichever muffler you decide. If you opt for header, make sure the heat riser flanges are drilled out. While you have your old exhaust off, see if you can determine that the heat riser tubes on your intake manifold are clear.
Sad to say but even high quality ceramic coated headers wind up rusting within a few years depending on your climate. I would go with a ceramic coated header just for the little bit more longevity if it were me. Mufflers that bolt onto headers are easily replaced, but pulling a header off the engine is just like replacing a stock muffler assembly.
Most on Samba maintain that a header exhaust will give you a few more HP, as your engine breathes a bit better and is less restrictive over stock exhaust. Some have said that your stock carb for '69 Bus may need to be re-jetted for the header application, and despite that, that it is jetted for Bus to begin with if the carb is a replacement from factory original.
Hope this helps. Semper Fi.

A good catch on that fact. On a Bus, you definitely want the exhaust exit to be by the tail light, without being blocked by the bumper.

Nothing fits and does the job like stock. If you're serious about your VW, don't screw around. Put that which was specifically designed for it by the German engineers that built the car back on.

dittos what Jody said.

you'll want this type of kit the clamps are much better for a bus.

I got this kit and wound up using the old clamps.

Semper Fi, Gunny!

I have a 79 bay I'm restoring, and have been searching the internet for the exhaust to put in, I want a quiet pack, but I have only found the single available for this year. Any Ideas why?

I just like the look of the double overall, and would like to have it on my bus. Since it is the larger 2.0 liter engine I figured it would be better.

Any parts supplier who picks the badly designed Monza over a 4 into 1 header and a single quiet pack, have no idea about good exhaust function.

Disgusting the lack of knowledge thee people have

This thread is a grave dig from nearly a year ago but I do agree, the MONZA style exhaust is a POS on any model IMHO and on a bus it will CUT your shin's to the bone ( or some poor unsuspecting female or child companion) on a bus install and also if the rear cargo door hatch seal is comprimised it will allow fumes/CO ect from the exhaust to enter the interior/cabin and make people sick.

Plus the fact that this thread started as a type1 upright exhaust question the recent poster bringing back to life about a late model type 2/4 engine exhaust needs different info/choices to boot.

I like the Monza (if Iam running a bigger then stock engine) but only a real monza thay are costly and hard to find but last a long time and has the best ground clearance and my tow hitch clears it. I also have to make a carb heat pipe that works. None of the aftermarket systems have carb manifold heat hookups that work. other then that I use stock setups. 4 into 1 systems hang too low and get mashed up eazy at least up here in Alaska where the dirt road is king. By the way the tail pipes don't stick out passed the bumper you don't hit your shin's on them.

There is something wrong with the bumper if it is blocking the tail pipes.

so does anyone not why at al a dual quiet pack muffler can't be found for the 79 Bus?

I have searched all over the internet for a dual qp, but can only find a single?
