Hi Guys: Am replacing gear shift rod bushings on my 75 VW bus. Can I replace the middle bushings without taking out the transmission/engine? |

Not as I understand it. Depending on your problems though you may get away with the front bush and the shift coupler bushes at the gearbox. Re-set the shifter and try.

Thanks:
Rplaced front bushing and rear coupling that joins onto the transmission, and fiddled with the bracket at the base of my gear stick. This gave basic gears, not great but basic. Problem was that 1/2 way thru a 4000 mile roadtrip my front bushing ended up parting down the middle and falling out, which left no or very hard to find reverse gear, so i really need to try to get at the middle bushings.
If I hav to drop engine/tranny that's OK, but it's work. |

You can not replace the bushings on the rear shift rod without removing the engine and transmission. The shift rod must be removed, it only comes out through the back, right through the center of the engine and tranny. It's gotta come out. |

Or, how about just replacing the front bushing to solve your problem?
Edit - on re-reading your above post, maybe you already have? I jumped the gun. |

On a '71 you can. Don't know about yours. |

Definitely not. The middle bushing is attached to the rear shift rod. The shift rod comes out the back of the Bus, you can't get it around the engine and transmission without bending the shit out of it. |

Like I said I don't know about a '75. Just '70 and '71's. I'm not going to run out and grab my manual but the front bushing of the rear shift rod can be changed with the trans in place. The rear shift rod can be pulled far enough forward to do it. On a '71 the only one you can't replace is the rear bushing. |
