I am getting ready to install the front shocks on a 87 Westy. Have read past posts about the problems(dirt, rust, lack of space, etc) of using the allen wrench in the hole on top of the shock. My suggestion is to cut the allen wrench into short straight pieces and then jb weld or epoxy them into the hole on top of the shock. Use a proper size wrench to hold the allen wrench stub while installing or removing the schock. This would elminate the dirt rust problem and you will have the allen wrench already installed in the shock to aid in installation or removal, plus you will not lose the cut down allen wrench. My question is this a good idea or will the allen wrench pieces rust and fall out creating a problem in the future?

Buy the way just got back from the Charlollte Autofair in NC. I was the only Vanagon there. Saw a few old bugs and nobody was set up selling parts. Had a few pictures taken of my van. This is not a VW show. Anyway averaged about 19.5 mpg @ 65mph with a Westy loaded with about 1000 lbs of stuff. Thanks for the reply 1621.

Done this twice now, I would recommend just trimming the short end of the allen wrench to make it fit. I would avoid the JB Weld trick as it could prove problematic for the reasons you listed. If you're concerned about road grime getting in there, just place a piece of tape over the top - though in my experience it's not been a problem.

I have a little stubby 5mm that fits into screw driver bit holder, so I use the little stubby 5mm with a vice grip on it. fits perfect on top of the shock. I have not had a problem with dirt in their either.

If you JB weld something in I'm guessing you might void the warranty?

If you use the allen so that the handle points towards you, it doesn't fit. But if you point the handle away from you it does. The shocks must be angled outward slightly on the way down.
