Sheesh. I wish I could see the pictures on dial up. What I have seen, so far, I'm jealous of.

BUCIOBATISTI Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:49 pm

Scott- The more original paint you expose the more I want to rub my wiener on your Bus.

ScottMcW Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:53 pm

Hmm...thanks for the offer Brendan, but I'll go with Motsenbocker's first. Hahah

Barry, you might have better luck checking out the pix on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottmcw/sets/72157618804267202/

Progress! I estimate you have completed 0.1% of the stripping. :)

nice job on the paint removal so far. Could you snap a pic of said chisel?

Exactly. It looks nice but not too sharp or else it would gouge the paint.

BUCIOBATISTI Mon Nov 02, 2009 11:08 am

and keep in mind that I wasn't shy about using it outdoors for all the ladies to see.

BUCIOBATISTI Tue Nov 03, 2009 11:16 pm

Scott, here's an excellent inspirational pic for you, it's an original paint 1955 European Deluxe (with segapones) that is currently for sale in the Czech Republic for 35,000 Euros (roughly $51,576.12 USD)...

I'll let Dr. Motsenbocker know that he is first in line next time he stops by the store. Maybe he has a new product that will speed up the paint removal process.

ScottMcW Wed Nov 04, 2009 12:59 am

Yeah Brendan, I was checking out those pix! Very cool. :)

BoW, say hi to The Wizard for me. Tell him we want Square Pan back soon! heheh

I did a little more work tonight. Got all of the paint off the lower edge of that pop out window, but put that on hold until I can get some good pix. Then, on the red I almost doubled the size of that spot. Can't wait until this weekend when I can hit it with some 1500 and 2000 paper to get a nice big chunk of SWR showing. I'm also going to make a quick video showing the tools and process.

Hey Kelly, I haven't taken a shot of the chisel I'm using yet, but it's basically just like the 1/4" version of this:

I think I'm going to pick up a 1/2" version as well for some of the curved spots. Also need to grab my bench grinder so I can keep them sharp!

As I said above, I'll take a video of myself doing the removal this weekend.

I don't think that is as nice of a bus as Vern. It looks rusty to me.... undercoating in the wheel wells and the doglegs were replaced with '63 and up thin lips......

sventinker Fri Nov 06, 2009 5:55 pm

Im glad the engine went to such a good home/bus. whoever gets the sunroof I would love to see the pics as it is done. thanks Scott it was nice meeting you. ron

ScottMcW Fri Nov 06, 2009 6:35 pm

Hey Ron, it was great meeting you and the fam too. You made that transaction super smooth! I'm still toying with the idea of keeping the ragtop. It's really a nice car! I'll keep you in the loop for sure though. Good luck on your project as well. I want to see that 62 rolling soon! :)

scott,
nothing like exposing some nice OG paint, should be looking great by the spring OCTO, A little lacquer thinner will wipe out that primer much quicker than rubbing compound then you can go to the 3-m products to exfoliate the german paint back to brilliance. PJ

ScottMcW Sun Nov 08, 2009 9:49 pm

Thanks PJ! Your bus is definitely inspiration for this project.

I was able to spend a couple of hours on Vern today. I've been increasing the space exposed over the past week by just scraping away for about 30 minutes for two nights. Once you get into the rhythm of things it moves along fairly fast. People have mentioned "oh, just put on some music and get zen with it", but I've found that you really need to listen to the sound of the chisel. You want to hear an almost zipper-like sound and you can grab a strip of paint all at once. I wasn't able to get any video of it yet, but I promise I will and all of this will make sense!

Here are some shots. Sorry about using Flickr, but it's really a ton easier for me. Here's a link to the album directly: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottmcw/sets/72157618804267202/ You can also go there and see any of these photos in much larger detail if you want.

Here's where we started today. As you can see, an hour's work during the week brought some good results.

I taped off the edges as they are crucial to the chisel process. My plan for the day is to sand down the primer with some 1500 grit and see what's beneath this gray.

Well, you can clearly see a couple more areas where they burned through the original paint with the d.a. back in the 70s. Of course I'm hoping this is minimal, but I'm now guessing it's more than I was hoping would be there.

This is where I left off today. There are a couple of things to note. Look at the odd coloring in the upper right corner. There seems to be at least two different reds up there. Also, it appears that there's bare metal > primer > red > primer > red > primer > yellow. Now, the last two I can account for, but did the factory double up the color like that?

After I finished the sanding, I zapped it with some rubbing compound and then a good coat of wax. The bare metal there is very pretty and shiny, as is the bit of paint that's still there.

I did a little work on a chestnut section, but will post that later. I only took it to primer, not the full treatment. It seems that the white paint is much thinner than the yellow so that brings other challenges. But so far, the minimal brown that I've exposed has been perfect. Perhaps I'll end up having to do a SWR respray only? Time will tell.

Culito Sun Nov 08, 2009 10:18 pm

Looks like the red was resprayed at some point. The factory did not double up the paint/primer that I know of.

I would really consider using something like Jasco Green Strip or oven cleaner. I did my whole truck with Jasco and it came out great. It would save a whole lot of time and tediousness!

Great effort trying to get down to the og paint.
