Glenn, have you installed caster shims? And had you considered dropped spindles either instead of, or in combination with, the adjustable beam?

I have a late model I would like to lower a bit, but am thinking the standard 2 1/2" drop from spindles may be more than I like. Lately I am thinking more of a Ron Lummus narrowed (2-3"), adjustable beam instead. I can turn bolts but can't weld worth a damn.

If its a daily driver, trust me do not use the adjustable beam method....no good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DANGER>>>>DANGER>>>>DANGER>>>>
I've had different results, i've put over 100,000 miles on this setup and feel it handles better, brakes better and rides like stock.

Avis adjusters lowered 3"
19mm front anti-roll bar
KYB GR2 shocks (72 Opel GT) 2" shorter
Rear dropped 1"
25mm rear anti-roll bar
KYB GR2 shocks (VW)
5.5x15 ET42 Porsche/Pedrini aluminum wheels
195/60-15 tires

It handles like a go kart.

Sounds good....may be it was just the crappy hack job the last owner did to the beam ....

Yes... I have single shims.

I didn't want dropped spindles. First off the push the wheels out and with 195 tires, I would of had to narrow the beam. Also I wanted to go lower then the set 2.5" of dropped spindles.

The trick to a nice ride are the shorter front shocks. If you use stock shocks, the rate are progressive. Meaning the more you compress them the harder they get. So putting them on a lowered beam means that are always compressed a few inches.

Exactly... mine handles great.

3" in the front and 1" in the rear but some other upgrades.

Glen, how many splines did you turn to get 1 inch drop at the rear?thanks

It was a combination of inner and outer splines. Honestly, I did it 15 years ago and don't remember the exact combo.

It's because stock does that.

Max Welton Mon Oct 19, 2009 9:12 pm

Really? Mine doesn't.

What I have noticed is that the bounce only starts after hitting a bump on the road and it gets worse as the car accelerates ...
That sounds like bad shocks.

Max All new shocks... the frame head pan is weak...

Lets just hope the car doesn't all of a sudden just lower itself while driving then

no that will not happen,I would never lower a beetle again, unless its my new beetle 2001....
