I have the original set of pillows for my '65 that I need to reinstall before my tar boards get placed. I cannot remember how far they actually go though.
I am looking at this picture and have a few questions . . .
1) The TOP picture is not the same as the triangular pillows that the car had, but an additional piece of foam for extra noise / dust control?
2) The lower picture looks like the pillow I have - is that where it goes, I mean, that is as far up?
I tried cramming it way up the C pillar and it was a disaster. I thought it went way up in there, but the lower picture looks more likely.
Thoughts?
Thanks! |

That bottom picture looks like the case with my '62. I can see the bottoms of 'em from inside the engine compartment. |

Cool, thanks!
I just don't remember taking them out, and presumed they were 'way up in there' . . . .LOL |

Probably depends upon wether your car was made on a Monday at 7am or a Friday at 5pm or some other day/time duriing the week :P |

I'm convinced the top picture is actually a drawing of the pillows. That's why they don't look like real triangles. I can understand how it would be hard to draw, realistically, an image of a puffy, folded triangle object. The bottom picture is, I think, the real deal. |

New question.
Is there any sort of alternative to the pillows that won't hold moisture? I'm not worried about overall correctness, just keeping fumes and noise out of the cabin.
I know spray foam is a sin, but I have a fresh can in the basement... |

Open cell foam wrapped in a porous cloth. |

So that is what came falling out recently. All brown and crusty. I wondered what the hell it was? LOL! Rot I guess. What is it for, Noise? |

In general it's not the dreaded foam that is at fault, it's the condensation from inside the roof that runs down and collects wherever there is a dam, be it foam or pillow. I've noticed it's a big problem here in California due to the hot days and cold nights. Pillows probably allow more water to drain off and dry up quicker though.
If i were doing a total ground up, I would consider applying Dynamat or some other self stick insulation on the inside of the roof itself. I believe if it were insulated better, there would be less condensation forming and running down. Same reason they wrap ducts and such in homes, to prevent condensation forming on the exterior. If the roof were insulated, you could safely spray expanding foam in the void for a much better sound and fume isolation. |

Well, I don't have a headliner or plan on doing anything to the inside of the roof in general. It has a nice trippy spray-glue pattern.
It seems like pretty much anything is going to trap moisture at some point. Maybe I could just make some block off panels for the sides of the engine compartment, with a tiny drain at the bottom? |

On my 64 some one said they cause rust and it appears that if you look close its started not to big a deal cause I was planning on striping down to metal and repainting it (after treating it in rust smort) so what I want to know is are do I need them? |

The OP scans appear to be from 58'-59' according to the chassis #'s.
It looks like there was a secondary pillow stuffed deeper up the channel. Has any one found a second inner pillow? Curious.
I have been progressively quieting down my 64' and last weekend discovered a missing pillow. I stuffed a rag up there for the short term and the difference was amazing!
It also cleaned up the cabin air which I thought was from ill fitting heater tube connectors.
edit: I found this post also shows loose fill inside with the pillows to seal or plug the bottom. What material would you use today? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=448813&highlight=pillows

If you have a car with oil containment issues, and you don't have the pillows, smoke can fill the cabin, and a light coat of oil can get on things, especially if your dome light is not installed :-) |

Terry, aka Agave58 posted this pic over on the 58/59 thread. I thought I would post it here. In the backround on the right side you can see a huge box full of pillows waiting to be installed on the assemble line.
