What color is a barndoor pedal (splash) pan supposed to be?

Does anyone know what the correct bolt and washer setup is to attach the pedal pan to the underside of a barndoor? Any picts? Phillips head, hex head, etc is the information I'm looking for.

Moderator note - Here is a summary:

Color: Grey Primer used on Buses

Hardware:
M6x15 bolts - 12
M8 lock washers - 12
M8 fender washers - 5 (used on 5 left and right side bolts only)

I believe that they were originally grey, but commonly resprayed black during repaints.

Is is a similar shade of grey like intake manifolds from the same era? Sort of a battle ship shade of grey?

I have one is that pretty nice on the back side, it looks like one of the standard grey colors used on the underside of a Bus.

The exposed side is just surface rust, like most I have seen.

I would say yes, although it may not be the same exact color.

Hi Dustin ... I have all the DuPont Chroma-one and Centauri formulas for the stock "grey" colors for interiors, splash pan, shocks, frame - underside, etc. I'll try to gather them up for you if you want to use DuPont.

Cool, I would like to know that DuPont formula as well. We have DuPont at work, but I have not found the gray color yet..

The best color match I found to the factory gray is RAL7012

Basaltgrau was also the best match on my 52 BD chassis !

but why is everybody so sure about the pans being grey ? The NOS replacement sure are, like all other factory replacement panels.

but there are many detachable parts on a BD chassis that are painted black.
for starters its the (upper) removable floorboard panel around the pedal assembly. the brake fluid inspection cover. also the oval cover for the steering column hole. the footrest is black. the shifter base too. the bumper and horn brackets are black. also both axles and brakes.
Taking into consideration this photo. :?: :idea:

It could be repainted but that seems unlikely to me given the wore off paint and surface rust

Very interesting ! Seems like another minute BD detail, we don't have a definite answer for.
Maybe an early vs late thing? possibly connected to VIN stamped doors and body parts, mabye the pan was also considered a related 'body' part? when did that end, late 52 or early 53?
maybe both colors were used over the years, depending on which paint was readily available?

the upper pedal (floor) cover als shows grey ( with an obviously black steering column hole cover). I have only ever seen black floor covers. My July 1953 single cab also had a black pedal (floor) cover. So who knows if we can trust these factory illustrations ? I don't think this particular pic has been heavily touched up. because the floor cover shows the wear/imprint of the waffle rubber floor mat. I don't think they would have faked that in.

If you look closely my 11/54 pedal floor panel and and the steering tube plate both have the slightest remnants of black paint left on them.

I’m going with black as my evidence points to them being factory black in my truck (11/54)

The pan that came with my 54 , although it had been media blasted , I put tape over a portion to keep an original patch of gray color for reference when Im ready to paint it. I cant claim it as original to the bus though.

IIRC, we were not sure about the orgin of the old undercarriage shot. We don't know if this a German location or not. bus in pic appears to be LHD (mirror).
your truck could be an Australian CKD kit assembled in Australia. so the colors could be different anyways.

There is a vintage picture of a Barndoor that’s had an accident as on its side that you can see the pan on.
I don’t have it to hand, but maybe someone else does. It might be in the vintage photo thread?
