Recently acquired this '62 vert and have been looking for original paint. Front hood and front fenders are not original, engine lid may also have been replaced.



Front hinge reinforcment area sure looks like Java Green to me. The paint can shows some Java Green I squirted onto a '65 Bug earlier this year. I thought Java Green was a later color though. Anybody know if a '62 vert could be ordered in Java Green?


Also needs a new top, but it's been a driver and still is.

Hi Stan, I've seen you at Atco and Flanders..that vert is cool, it looks like Java Green started in '64 according to the archives. My '67 Vert was originally Java Green. You got any pics of the interior?

Java green was only available from 64 to 67. Turquoise L380, and Beryl green L478 were offered in 62, but yet that looks Java green to me too?

Time to crack open the books. That body sure appears later to me. There are '64 and up clues all over- signals, license light (why is the brake res. there? I need photos inside to be sure. check other fittings like the rear view mirror, seats, etc. The dash says alot. I am not researching this much further- but didn't '65s have a flasher? All in all- the amount of Java alone departs it enough from my gulf blue '62 vert to call this a body swap.

i didn't notice the license light..it looks swapped and is a different shade of blue. you can see where the bigger one was mounted that was taken off.

Behind dash. Speedo might be stamped 2.64. I'll check tomorrow.


Rear seat has only upholstery that might be original.


Spare tire well with non-functional brake reservoir. Has been upgraded to dual circuit master with relocated dual circuit reservoir.


VIN# seemed to match title, but it's hard to read. Will need to look at it more carefully.


This convert has been modified and patched up in numerous places. But it's pretty solid and very driveable. Body swap is possible, perhaps also is an error in the year indicated on the title.

I have received a recent MA title from the previous owner who owned it since 2004. He installed a B-case motor from a '65 bus he had (not original to bus) that is still running good. Paint and modifications were done previous to his ownership.

The PO mounted the license plate light cover. It had a later one on it. I haven't checked the paint color on the inside of the lid yet.

The straight edge of the steering box access hole is vertical and on the left. On a '62 it should be horizontal and on the bottom. I believe they changed the orientation in '64, which would explain the Java Green paint.

It looks like the first three digits of the VIN on the tunnel are 337, which would make it Sept. '60 chassis ('61 model year).

Sounds/looks like a body swap to me.

The back seat cover is 64 only.

I'm starting to believe it's a '64 body. Any other things I could look at or take pix of to determine the age of the pan?

I still need to check and see if there are original seat covers or door panels under the current ones.

The VIN on the title is 4337104.
The VIN on the tunnel looks like 337??4.
The character to the left of the "33" in the tunnel VIN looks like it could be a VW symbol.

Thanks for all the help. I'm more of bus guy and haven't owned a Beetle in years, and this is the first convertible I've ever owned.

Looks like it could be a 6 to me. Which would make the vin 633xxxx, which would be a May 1964 build date.

I agree, Java Green with that upholstery, that is a 1964 convertible.

It looks like someone really messed with the VIN..I hope it's not stolen. Probably just because of the body swap.

Ding ding- we have a winner! Spotted that upholstery right away- other clue: steering wheel and horn bar. Good spot Mannaxman on the cover plates.

The rear seat material is specific to 64 beetles only and is not reproduced as of today. So java green, small windshield and that cloth should make it a 1964. My guess is that the year was typed wrong on the reg. at some point. I had a hell of a time earlier this year trying to explain to the RI DMV that my 68 beetle vin# was the engine #. A 40 year old DMV error. Good luck with it Stan.

Also, the centre pressing on the decklid finishes early next to the light housing. That together with a t-handle indicates a 64 decklid as well.

I recently fixed an oil leak on my '64 vert and was able to drive it again, after a year-plus slumber.

Oil cooler bracket broke away and caused a steady oil leak.


Motor back in and not leaking!


Took it for a cruise to see my buddy Cisco at his bike shop in Framingham, MA. That's his '66 bug.


Washed the vinyl top I installed a few years ago.


Took it to lunch at my favorite Mexican eatery in Framingham.

I replaced the old, stiff steering box in the '64 vert this week.

Here is the old steering box in place. It was hard to turn and forget about wheel return after turning.
I first removed the tie rods to confirm the problem was with the steering box, it was.


New TRW steering box.


These mount studs need to be transferred from the old box to the new one. Mine came out with no problems after some cleaning and lube.


My old steering box was from a '55-'61 bug, which has a larger output shaft and different pitman arm.
Bug City in Berlin, CT supplied me with the used '62-'65 pitman arm, shown installed on the new TRW steering box.


'55-'61 pitman arm in foreground wouldn't work with new steering box.


New steering box installed. Also replaced the right side tie rod ends and greased the left side ones.


Much nicer steering now. Next step is an alignment.
