I want to upgrade the suspension on my 4 seater sand rail. Right now, I have ball joint front, irs rear, empi coilover shocks all around. The front beam in adjuatable but its at a stock height right now. I dont wanna go with a crazy suspension but was looking to box the irs, and put all new shocks in.

I'd prefer something with a resivour or coilover.

Would upgrading the shocks be a good start with good benefits?

Shock upgrades are always a good idea. You may not be happy with the little you will gain with shocks if you are still bottoming out. A mild upgrade on suspension travel will make a huge difference in handling. The question is if you have the time and money to invest in it. If all you can do is shocks then any quality shock will be an improvement.

I'm not sure what else to do with the rear other than shocks. I cant do trailing arms because if its any wider it wont fit on the trailer since I have wide wheels. Any such thing as 3x0 arms?

Have you considered using smaller rear tires/wheels for trailering? Lots of folks do this, and I'm currently looking for some trailer tires for myself because my rail fits on the trailer as is, but the rims are against the side rails of the trailer.

If I make the rear wider then the front is going to need to be wider also, The rear is already wider and I think anymore and the front and rear tires wont even follow the same track. A wider from beam is to much for me right now.

There arent any trailing arm the dont increase the width?

Thanks I never saw that before. I also found there are heavy duty rear torsion springs available. I kinda feel like that would be a good option for me right now. It handles fine but bottoms out in the rear.

Also are there wider front trailing arms available for a ball joint suspension? I havent found any other than wider beams.

nope. lift spindles are available, though.

I flip my wheels over while in transit.... meaning deepdish side in while on the trailer.... or at least i did when i had crappy wheels.... :wink:

yes there are 3x0 trailing arms. I am currently running them on my bug, along with running stock length axles, and all type 1 stuff. I would have no idea where to buy them though. I have run across them once in a while in classified ads.

i think mckenzies carries the stock x 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 trailing arms. here is the link. they are on page 12.

You might call Avery's Aircooled. They build almost any size you want. The quality of the arms is great, they are heavy duty and look very nice. Here is their arm webpage: http://www.averysaircooled.com/offroad/trailingarms2.cfm

We Run Rancho RS9000 socks on our rails and have had great success. I have stock boxed dog legs and stock torsions.

They sure soften up the ride.

I am using RS99287s on the rear and are 18.5 compressed and 30.5 extended.

They have 9 different valving settings from super soft to super stiff.

I have them mounted as close to over top the bearing housing as possible and about head hieght in the roof down rights.

Here is a pick showing 1.how soft the sand was that year and the shock set up.
